LEGO Awesomeness

It's one thing to do whimsical magic houses in 2 dimensions on a piece of paper. A person who can do that well is considered a good cartoonist. It's an entirely other thing to render such a reality defying house in 3D, physical reality. A person who does that is a genius.3 points -

[Open source] LEGO Racers Online + LEGO Racers API
Ayliffe and one other reacted to Hoithebest for a topic
Hello friends, The moment is here. LEGO Racers Online (not finished) and the LEGO Racers API (mostly finished, but needs new functions all the time) are now published on GitHub as an open source project. I don't know how Git exactly works and the source code is published to the development branch. I would love to see if you guys could contribute in this project and create forks so I can merge them into the master project. I will review all submitted code and if the code has a good quality, I will add it to the development branch (which had to be the master branch actually). Don't ask me how to put this project Visual Studio, because I don't know how to. Please contact Grappigegovert for more information about this as he done this before. One important thing to remember The software is not complete yet and does probably not what you expects it to do! It's possible that it's not even running online functionality yet/anymore because of the latest developments. This can be fixed easily, but I didn't have time for this last weeks. I am not going to contribute much on the project too for the coming months due to school. Requirements If you want to contribute to the master code, you will need a free GitHub account. Visual Studio (2013 if you don't want compatibility issues) A fresh brain because developing on this project is sometimes a pain in the ass Credits Me: Client, Server, Library and the API. Grappigegovert: massive, massive research for the API. This guy created most of the API functions. Repository You can find all code on the following page: https://github.com/Hoithebest/legoracersonline/tree/development Remember to select the development branch, NOT the master branch! Please create forks and submit them if you would like to contibute. Information about the Solution Some information about the Solution. All code is written in C#. Client Type: executable This Visual Studio Project contains the Client software which allows players to connect to the Server. It uses the LEGO Racers API to control the game. All game controlling functions should not be developed in this project but in the LEGORacersAPI project as this provides the core for communicating between C# and the LEGO Racers game process. LEGORacersAPI Type: class library (outputs a DLL) This Visual Studio Project is considered as the core of the whole project. In the beginning of this project, all game controlling functions were built into the Client directly, but for flexibility, the LEGO Racers API deserved an own Visual Studio Project so it could be reused in other projects too. The outputted DLL can be loaded into other projects to build mods for LEGO Racers. Library Type: class library (outputs a DLL) The library contains information that both the Client and the Server need to know about. Things like participants are stored here. The outputted DLL is being loaded in the Client and Server software. Server The Server software stores all data that the Clients sends to it. When Clients send data to the Server, it processes the requests and returns a response that the Client will process again. The Server is also capable of starting races (mostly). Communication between Clients and Server There are multiple requests a Client can do to the Server. This can be done using TCP and UDP. The following things are being sent through TCP: Connect to a Server When a player wants to join a Server, a request is sent to the Server, which checks if the entered username is still available. It sends a responsive whether the joining was successful or not. Start a race When the Server hoster starts a race, all participants (racers) receive a TCP packet containing the level information. Using a Power Up When a player uses a Power up, this is sent to the Server through TCP, which sends it to all other players in the game (TCP too). For the requests being sent in a loop, we use the UDP protocol which is not as reliable as TCP is, but for those requests is doesn't care when a packet dies on its way to the Server or Client. The following things are being sent through UDP: Sending and receiving coordinates The current player coordinates are being sent with a very low delay. The Server stores this information and returns the coordinates of all the others players as a response. (Settings are also sent in these packets, but this has to change in the future.) To-do list The following things have a high priority in order to build further on the project: Starting a race from the Server Trigger the Initialized (in the API) correctly I will add more to-do items later, as the list is much longer than mentioned above (can't think about more right now, it's been a while since I have been developing on the project). When coding, please think of the following things: Put as many comments as possible in the code, ESPECIALLY WHEN WORKING ON THE API. CODE WITHOUT COMMENTS ABOVE FUNCTIONS WILL NOT BE ACCEPTED IN THE MASTER CODE! Work with as many classess as possible because this will make it easier for other developers and for extensibility. If you need more information, please comment in this topic and I will add the answers here. Happy coding friends!2 points -

My mom said the look on my face was priceless. As for what I gave, to my mom was a large stuffed tiger that she saw in the store, that she fell in love with. For my dad, A multi tool hammer (he loves multi tools) and for my brother, I got him Minecraft for his computer. I'm gonna go over there and help him set up his account sometime today and we'll LAN play a world together. This was a special Christmas for me, especially for the Piano. Thanks Mom and Dad! Also, thanks to all of you guys as well.2 points -

Cavern Run
MaelstromIslander reacted to Jimbob for a topic
Rock Raiders: Cavern Run Merry Christmas to everyone at RRU! On this special day, I have prepared a little present for you all: Cavern Run, a web game based on the arcade games of the 80s. Weighing in at just over 3MB (a bit larger than the sizes available back then, but meh), this game places a character designed by you, using the character creator at the beginning, into a long cavern filled with deadly hazards and rewarding Energy Crystals. Jump, shoot lasers and blast sonic at the obstacles in your way to make it as far as possible and gain the highest score, all while your running speed gets increasingly faster. With an excellent soundtrack by @Shadowblaze, an addictive-yet-simple gameplay and competitive working leaderboards, Cavern Run is sure to make this Christmas (and beyond) a special one! Play Now Cavern Run Requirements - Web browser with Adobe Flash Player (please ensure to allow data storage before you play the game) - Keyboard Instructions The game is played using the up, left and right arrow keys. The game will guide you through the menus and gameplay mechanics. At the character creator, pressing Jump while on the Head selection will begin the game. Crystals earn you 10 points each, Slimy Slugs earn you 30 points each and Rock Monsters earn you 50 points each. After you are defeated, you may enter your name using your keyboard (Backspace deletes characters, Delete will not work). Please do not use offensive or inappropriate names or your score entry will be removed. It is recommended that you use your RRU name or similar (there is a 10 character limit) to identify yourself to others when viewing the leaderboards. When you have finished a game, press the orange Reload button at the top-right corner of the screen if you wish to play again. In full screen mode you will need to refresh the page instead. Please note that you may have to click on the game screen a few times during the menu if the keys do not respond, this is an issue with Flash. Imperfections Make You Human
Jimbob reacted to Drill Master for a blog entry
Though I probably can't top Sadie's words of her previous blog, I have my own story to tell. I was outside in the cold preparing to hang up Christmas lights, (we were like the only ones who hadn't yet.) and decided to change the bulb on the far end of the porch (we have 2 porch lights, this one had been out for a while). So I climb the ladder and pull down the light cover and a cloud of dust and dead bugs welcomes me (bleh, I hate cleaning these things). I unscrewed the old fluorescent light from the fixture and went inside to get a new one. I checked our box to see one last bulb, and as I pulled it out, I noticed that it had an imperfection on it. There was a bubble in the glass. I didn't think anything of it and headed back outside. I climbed the ladder once more and began screwing in the bulb. I gave it 3 quick turns and let go to reposition my hand to finish it, when to my supprise, the bulb fell out of the socket, hit the porch, and shattered into a bunch of tiny little pieces... It took me a second to realize what happened. I grabbed the flashlight I had (it was night when this happened) and shined it down where the light had fell. Sure enough, there was what was left of the base surrounded by little bits of glass. So, for the sake of my dog's paws, I spent around a half hour sweeping and picking up every piece I could see. I had almost finished when a slightly larger piece caught my eye. I reached down to pick it up, and there was the part of the bulb with the imperfection on it. It was completely undamaged, and nor was the glass around it. And then it made me think. (Yes you probably know where I'm going with this). That imperfection, a bubble that was never meant to be, survived when the rest of the bulb did not. I thought a lot about this well after the accident. We all have our imperfections. Me, I'm far from even knowing what perfect is. I'm all the time dropping things due to my clumsiness. And thanks to that, I was able to realize something. Just because you have faults, doesn't mean that they aren't always bad. Your imperfections are what make you stronger, because you learn from them. Don't see them as a weight that will drag you down, but as an opportunity to build yourself up as a human. This was just a little thing that happened that I felt like sharing.1 point -
Imperfections Make You Human
aidenpons reacted to Jimbob for a blog entry
What a lovely story that really conveys the concept behind it. I agree, although I suppose I'd word it a little differently, depending on how you define 'imperfection'. We all have imperfections, some we can iron out through actively trying while others are innate issues that we must learn to cope with or will take time to remove. Regarding innate imperfections, having them doesn't mean you can't utilise them. Maybe you've been through trauma and consequently sealed off your emotions, is that imperfection purely bad? No, it grants you assertiveness and the ability to be stronger in making difficult decisions. I guess my point is I don't think we can make light of all our imperfections - e.g. if you have a constant desire to murder, as an extreme example - but those that we can't are usually the ones that can be 'fixed', otherwise yes you can make good use of your bad imperfections.1 point -

New Skyboxes
Rock Monster reacted to Creator for a topic
I'm not sure if this belongs here, since Skyboxes are gradients, rather than textures, but they change in-game visuals, so it's sort of fitting, I suppose. Anyway, I created some personal in-game backgrounds (skyboxes), based on the backgrounds from box deisgns and catalogues. Since LR1 skyboxes are defined by a mere three colours, the possibilities are sort of limited, but I chose to share this anyway...
