Today, I tried to MOC for the first time. I've never moc'd before, always just building to play. The result was nothing like what I was planning, and I have no idea how good it is.3 points -
Hey everyone! That time of week again! Here is my latest track called "Breach". See what you think! https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Ftx6lLYym9o So, I'm starting to feel the weight of making music every week, but I'm pulling through. It had definitely been a handful, and I've been trying to get it all worked out. I feel like it's my job to make music for you, and I'm not going to quit when it gets rough (like I have done in the past year). If I want music as my career, then I need to treat it as such. Hope you guys like every track that I produce this year, and thanks to all of you for being here. #sappycomment3 points

Let's Make a Game
aidenpons and one other reacted to Jimbob for a topic
"Oh no, not another one of these topics". Before you make any presumptions about this topic, I want to make two things abundantly clear: 1) Forget the stigma. The justice system generally works as "innocent until proven guilty", not "guilty until proven innocent". Unfortunately there seems to be a mentality around RRU that any large project will not be completed, and while this is quite often true, approaching this particular topic with such a pessimistic view isn't going to do any favours. See this topic as innocent until proven guilty, a.k.a. destined to succeed until proven a failure. 2) Let me define "game". When I say game here, I'm talking at its most basic technicality, let's make a game featuring a character who can move and jump, maybe swing a sword too. Let's not even consider making more than one level, in fact let's not consider making a fully-functioning first level. When I say "game", I mean let's produce a bare-bones interactive project we can be proud of. Forget your AAA games, forget even your Indie games. I'm thinking of a toddler's drawing in comparison to a Da Vinci masterpiece. Alright, with that out of the way, I have a proposal for RRU. Let's make a small game together! Let's make a little character who can move and jump, and if we get far enough, maybe even have them able to attack or interact with an environmental object. To reiterate above, I'm talking about the basic mechanics of a game, don't think about anything beyond a character and small environment. Interested? We'd need a few different roles to be filled: Designer Someone to decide what the game will do. Will it be a top-down game where a square floats around a tiled board? Or a front-on side-scrolling platformer where a character jumps about? Programmer - JimbobJeffers I'll happily fill this role. This person will program the mechanics of the game, making the character actually do what the designer wants. For those interested, I'd be working in Flash as I'm very familiar with it and have programmed several different types of games in the past. Artist - Aokpisz, Ben24x7, MaelstromIslander, rioforce The artist will design the visuals of the game. They'd draw the character, or the square, but they probably wouldn't animate it. They'd also draw the environment. Animator - Ben24x7, MaelstromIslander Animates the character and anything else that moves. This person breathes life into the artist's work. Musician - Drill Master, Shadowblaze Some music in the background to complement the game, no matter how small it may be, would be great to liven it up. SFX - JimbobJeffers, rioforce, Xiron The audial feedback for the player, while not necessary, definitely makes the experience much more engaging. Would anyone be interested in this project? Play Now! Lego Racers music project
le717 and one other reacted to J Reggie for a topic
ProfessorBrickkeeper, I can certainly upload MIDI. I'll try to get around to it later tonight, when I have some time. I'll eventually be using (hopefully) the Reason Orkester Soundbank to make the final product, but that's a long way down the road, as I want to get to all of the transcriptions first. So if you want high quality music sooner rather than later, it's probably a better idea to do it yourself, as you said. EDIT: Here are the download links for the Midi files. They may be a bit messy, especially with the velocity, since Sibelius seems to respond differently to velocity. Also note that I changed the octave of certain lines so that notes wouldn't overlap. It's probably also all in one layer currently. Let me know if you notice any mistakes; I'm sure I missed some things or got a note wrong here and there, and it would be great to have input so I can make these as accurate as possible. http://oresome.rockraidersunited.com/download/236 http://oresome.rockraidersunited.com/download/237 http://oresome.rockraidersunited.com/download/238 http://oresome.rockraidersunited.com/download/239 http://oresome.rockraidersunited.com/download/240 Have fun!2 points -
Lego Racers music project

UPDATE: I now have transcriptions for four more songs. It's not that much, but I figured I should post an update since I haven't posted anything in a while. Whip: Witch: Magma: Docks: Let me know if anyone wants me to upload any other elements of these, such as the audio, Sibelius documents, XML files, PDFs, or anything else. So far, the audio for these is just played by Sibelius' piano sound. As a side note, these songs are so weird! I never noticed how many crazy things happen in them until I started transcribing them. I believe they were composed by the main developer of the game, who might not have had that much musical training and mostly just a good ear.2 points -
Lego Racers music project
bobsayshilol reacted to J Reggie for a topic
I'm working on a large-scale project involving the music from LR1. This project has four ultimate goals: 1. To create note-for-note transcriptions of all of the .TUN files in LR1 (PC version). These will not be playable on any instrument, but will form the basis for the rest of my work with the music. I plan on posting these here in case anyone wants to create their own reductions or arrangements. 2. To create playable piano reductions for all of the music. I will be using my own judgement as to what to change or not to include to make these playable. I can also add fingering suggestions if people so desire. The reductions will probably end up requiring around an intermediate level of skill to play up to speed, but I'll try not to make them too crazy. 3. To arrange all of the music for the instruments it was originally scored for. This will be both just for the fun of looking at the full score and also in the unlikely event that anyone wants to play any of these songs in a band (if this ever happens, please send me a link to it!) Note that some of the instruments I will be scoring for are transposing instruments, so it might get a little confusing if you're not used to reading full scores. This will also help me in my final goal, which is: 4. To reproduce all of the .TUN files using high-quality samples and synthesizers. That way, anyone can use the same songs in Lego Racers without the cheesy 90s MIDI samples (nothing against those personally, but it would be nice to have more realistic-sounding music). I'm not sure how long this entire project will take, but I will keep you posted on my progress. If anyone has any of the songs which they would like to have sheet music to sooner rather than later, let me know and I will try to get to them first. Here are samples of the first three goals for this project, all of Rocket.TUN (the theme from Rocket Racer Run). Transcription: Reduction: Orchestration:1 point -

THEORY: The Sam Sinister Switcheroo
aidenpons reacted to emily for a topic
You all know what I'm talking about. That logic defying enigma of the Adventurers theme, when Baron von Barron became Sam Sinister, and Sam Sinister vanished into the ether, his only subsequent appearances defaulting to his German name Slyboots. It's become more or less the punchline to the joke of the Baron's many names, which in itself was a symptom of LEGO's problem with leaving character names and specific story details up to each individual region at the time. It's tempting to chalk it up to some error on LEGO's part, but that's proven impossible thanks to ">this infuriatingly tantalizing MANIA Magazine page that bills the character "Sam Sinister (aka Baron von Barron). So the question is, why the heck did LEGO assign the name to another character? And why did that character later assume the dress of the original? I think I may have an answer. But first of all, to avoid things getting confusing really fast, I'm going to assign identifiers to each minifig that is pertinent to this discussion. This guy will heretofore be referred to as fig A, this guy is fig B and this guy is fig C. And now, for absolute clarity, here's a rundown of the known names that have been assigned to each figure: FIGURE A 1998: Baron von Barron, Evil Eye, Mr. Hates, Ulrich Unhand 2000: Sam Sinister, Sam Sanister, Alex Gluipstra FIGURE B 1998: Sam Sinister, Lizard Boots, Slyboots FIGURE C 2003: Lord Sam Sinister This theory hinges on one major assumption: That there was a massive miscommunication in 1998 regarding the identities of the Adventurers figures. I do not believe that this is too far-fetched - continuity and consistency were the furthest things from LEGO's minds at the point, and the names and personalities of figures were by and large only a small part of what they were doing - selling toys. Look at the awful confusion of Insectiods and UFO characters that we see all over the place - it is apparent that LEGO was not devoting too much energy to fig identity at the time. So what would this massive miscommunication be, then? It's comprised of a few parts. At the core of it, this theory assumes that in the original story treatment for Adventurers, Figure B is designated the 'big bad' while Figure A is designated his sidekick or hired help. This idea may seem unintuitive to us as fans long trained to think of Figure A as the definitive villain of Adventurers, but bear with me - this will make more sense as it goes along. In fact, we know with full certainty that the original US continuity did, in fact, have Figure B as the big bad - it just chose to shine more of the spotlight on Figure A anyway. Figure A is shown as the brutish and forward muscle of the team, with Figure B as the sneaky brains. This leads us to our first major proposition - the name Sam Sinister was always originally intended for Figure A, and the name Baron von Barron was originally reserved for Figure B. "Baron von Baron," while being distinctly tongue-in-cheek, is a name that carries overtones of dignity and aristocracy. In that regard, it is much more applicable to the tux-and-tophat clad Figure B, as opposed to Figure A, who is more rough-and-ready with proper desert gear. Now we turn our attention to the other continuities. The stories in the UK and Germany overlap almost entirely, with Figure A being the villain leader and Figure B being his hired help, a retired boxing champion. When was the last time someone said 'boxing champion' and you imagined a man in a tuxedo and spectacles? Contrast that with the powerful Figure A, with battle wounds and a silhouette made more powerful by bulking his shoulders with epaulettes. Figure A is also framed as the brute of the two in the US continuity. And so I propose that in the UK/Germany continuities, the names of Figure A and Figure B were not switched, but their identities were. If we go so far as to assume all of the above is true, things begin to fall into place. In 2000, with the advent of the Dino Island line, LEGO wants to bring back Figure A as the antagonist. Rather than pursue their now two-year-old blunder in naming him Baron von Barron, they use his proper, intended name and leave a note in MANIA magazine for any readers that might remember back to the 1998 issues. This ultimately creates a problem for third-party story developers like ATD when they worked on LEGO Racers - Figure B had had a name, but now it had been taken away from him. The solution, then, would be to look at other names that had been used for that figure and select one, (Slyboots). So a few years pass and LEGO gears up to reboot Adventurers as Orient Expedition. They want to bring back the original big bad, Figure B, as the antagonist, but they run into a problem: Figure A's presence in the Dino Island theme, and later the Johnny Thunder and the Adventurers animations in 2002, had solidified him as the definitive villain of the series. Bringing back Figure B wouldn't make sense to fans, especially considering the confusion with his name that would already have been apparent. So they compromised: use Figure A, but give him Figure B's garb to channel some of that energy. A nice idea on paper, maybe, but it's given people like us some serious headaches as we wonder what the heck is going on. And so the Sam Sinister switcheroo was complete, and two Sams became one.1 point -

I may add them myself, I've actually been looking into alternatives like parallax mapping but at the moment it isn't worth that level of extra effort. As for the "Too much for the game to render", I could set it up to be a High setting only type thing but it would definitely tax on rendering and I rather keep everything at a stable level and have the game run on older machines. Again, its a time thing and would a few bumps be worth detracting from the time I could spend on Gameplay. Maybe one day.1 point -
