Heyo and have another track! This time I give you a change of scenery. I went into the Dance/Electronic genre with Move. It just came to me last night. Just trying to expand and branch out to other styles and see what I come up with. Hope you enjoy it! (PSSST! Fush did the artwork! )

Which LEGO Island game is your favorite?

Either LEGO Island or Island Xtreme Stunts. Not sure I can choose which. LEGO Island feels really alive and animated. If you were to strip out all of the character interactions, there wouldn't really be much meat to it (five minigames and a couple more for when the Brickster escapes, and some stuff to click on). But they put a lot of care (perhaps the bulk of it) on the writing and animating the characters. While the other two games usually just put the characters on a standard idle animation and cycled through face textures as they talked (the voice actors probably mostly being whoever was around at the studio), LEGO Island had more carefully selected voice actors, and they animated every character's movement to match the every voice clip very carefully, even making that system to lip sync the faces to what the characters were saying. For 1997 it was really impressive... And still more than what a lot of games do today when it comes to animated characters (not referring to big AAA games with motion captured humans and all that). I also really like the sense of humor the writing has. And the soundtrack... Very nice. The other two games didn't really aim to do the same thing, or at least not as much of it - they tried to focus on fun gameplay. In the case of LEGO Island 2, I think it was trying too hard to be too fun, and ended up with way too many one-off minigames that are just mildly entertaining for a few minutes each at best - and I presume creating so many unique systems stretched the programmers thin on polishing any one element of the game (and indeed, a lot of stuff was cut... Maybe not enough). I also would have preferred a less linear structure. What if you had been able to go to any island, with the simple objective of collecting pages, however that might be? Island Xtreme Stunts felt roughly like what LEGO Island 2 was trying to be, but on a smaller scale. But that smaller scale let them polish things a bit more, and I think led to a much better game. It's still no GTA or Tony Hawk's Pro Skater, but I had a lot of fun simply exploring and finding hidden collectibles. The island also felt a lot more alive - the islanders doing things like having dance parties or driving vehicles, and even the smaller details (like seagulls on ledges that flew away when you got near, or things reacting to thrown pizzas) added a lot for me. It felt like a fun place to visit - like the first game. The soundtrack has some nice tunes, too. That's... A bit more text than I thought I'd write.

about being reused basicly not only do they reuse dna but they've stolen ideas from various parts of the classic lego games let me explain studs are stolen from lixs power bricks rip are a stolen idea of lego island gold bricks are a stolen idea of lr2 free play is a stolen idea from legoland > IXS doesn't have studs as collectibles. > Worlds doesn't have any power bricks that we know of (and LI only had one, which isn't accessible to the player) > There have been gold bricks in quite a few of the old lego games, and nearly all of the games since 2005. > Nearly every lego game, old and new, has some kind of free play. Heck, most games in general have free play. > How exactly can Lego 'steal' an idea from themselves?

While McJobless and others do their glorious duty to explain the practice and perils of game design, I would like to recommend Processing. It's (usually) a variation of Java, and it's incredible for developing basic games, making prototypes or mockups, or simply experimenting with code.

So over on Eurobricks, this intriguing teaser image was found on the back of an instruction booklet for 60097 City Square: It's extremely vague and the URL doesn't work (yet), but could this be the sandbox free-building lego game we've all been waiting for?

Hello, Rock Raiders United community. I've been on-and-off lurking these forums for a while, and decided to join. I used to be fairly active on BZPower under the username "Tacku" too. I'm a fan of classic LEGO video games, particularly LEGO Island, LEGO Racers, and LEGO Alpha Team. So, hello to all of you! The whole "Brickster being on parole so he can star in a movie" didn't make much sense either. It's disappointing that the Brickster was sort of Flanderized in both LEGO Island 2 and LEGO Island Xtreme Stunts. In the original game, he would always taunt the player character. In the sequels, he was written as taunting just for the sake of taunting. The original game's characters were designed to have different strengths and weaknesses, and the Brickster sure knew about those weaknesses. "Hey Pepper, want a tip? Here's one: learn to read!" became "Did anyone tell you there's a second gear?". LEGO Island 2 (GBA) is actually my third-favorite. It just felt like there was more to see and do throughout the story and after you defeated the Brickster. When you finish LEGO Island 2 (PC), everyone just says that there's still plenty of fun to be had on LEGO Island. You can't do anything else other than try to beat your high scores at the mini-games.

    Hello!

The "memory issues" you're referring to were more hard drive issues. In late 2009 (an era of history when America still had a space shuttle program and the whole world was petrified of swine flu), I made the upgrade from Mac OS X Leopard to Mac OS X Snow Leopard. As I recall correctly, Snow Leopard's file system was a bit different from Leopard's. This caused the internal files for the LEGO Island 3 project to become corrupted. That's why I stopped at Build 15 and started to release Build 15.X. They were incremental releases as I rebuilt the project and refactored old code, redrew some textures, etc. I never made much progress after Build 15.5, though. I do not imagine working on the LEGO Island 3 project I started in late 2008. However y'all might be interested in learning this... In July-ish 2012, I started from scratch (again) on a totally new LEGO Island-related project. It's plot would roughly follow LEGO Island 3's but with almost completely different gameplay: Far less combat. So much of the old LEGO Island 3 was throwing pizzas at people and killing them. That's a little dark, don't you think? Instead of combat, the game would have focused on Pepper collecting LEGO bricks (like the ones in Island Xtreme Stunts) and using those bricks to design solutions to puzzles, vehicles, and defensive structures. These bricks would have also been the game's currency. You'd spend them to rebuild LEGO Island. More exploration. The game would have featured a totally open world (the one exception being taking a spacecraft to OGEL Prime for the final boss). In the proof-of-concept demo I created, you could take a jet ski and explore the entire Phanta Sea (which was only populated with LEGO Island and LEGO City, but still). No more SS LEGO Island. LEGO Island itself is now the game's home base and hub. Improved graphics. This game probably would have been called Return to LEGO Island. Haven't worked on it since September 2012. I'd like to finish it, but I probably won't because it's a lot of work for one person. I might release the source files to my old LEGO Island-related projects in the future, though. They're on a backup drive somewhere -- I'll have to find it.

What you seem to be saying is that people think "oh this is just like Creator, this will be great!". I don't believe anyone thinks that this will be a repeat of Creator. People are comparing this to Creator in that it appears to be a and box style Lego game. No one thinks there will be overly powerful dynamite(which I happened to love) or that the game won't run on XP or that the game will corrupt saves. The reason Creator had those problems(except for the dynamite) was not because of design but because it was programmed on a much simpler system a decade-and-a-half ago. When people compare it to Creator, they think "Lego, for all the poor memory space and simpler systems sixteen years ago put a lot of effort into making a sandbox game? Imagine how cool it would be if they did that now with modern computers awesome capabilities!" Sixteen years ago, Lego tried to make a sandbox game. Such a game(at least aimed at small(ish) children) was revolutionary. Imagine just how awesome a Lego sandbox game would be now. Also, Creator was great fun. I loved making robots and spaceships(which you could FLY!) and dynamite turrets. I really don't understand the bile you have towards it. "Laudated"? What pray tell does "laudated" mean? Did you mean "lauded"? Because I checked the OED online version and "laudated" ain't a word, sonny-boy. Now take off that fancy "Grammar-Nazi" badge.

Don't start with a big project. Start with really simple games like pong or tetris. You will learn a lot about structuring and organizing your code. You will also learn a lot about your programming language and libraries and realise a lot of problems that you didn't thought of before. There are a lot of programming languages out there. It doesn't really matter which one you choose because the basic concept is nearly the same. Look at the examples and tutorials and choose one you like. You will notice that learning your second programming language is much much easier than the first one.

There isn't a ton I can say that jamesster hasn't already covered. LEGO Island wins in my book because story and characters didn't come secondary to the idea of making a game, they were the point of the game. That just makes all the difference to me. Yeah, IXS is probably one of the better LEGO games we've had from a gameplay perspective, but we also have a really dopey Brickster whose goal has been upped to world destruction for no apparent reason, a Laura who speaks in serious monotone about how she just loves to patrol on her bike guys, and a Nubby who talks about Socrates because SEE HE TALKED ABOUT PHILOSOPHY TYPE THINGS IN THE ORIGINAL GAME SO SOCRATES WE TOTALLY GET HIS CHARACTER. The greatest emotion I can amount in regards to it is, "yeah, okay, that's nice." But on LEGO Island the characters are colorful and alive and Wes had a competent sense of humor and the Brickster is a goshdarn genius whose every word is laced with brilliance while also being a colossal jerk. And the characters have weaknesses and dreams and they actually act like they know each other and can talk to each other like human beings and I mean have you ever heard that line where Nick thanks Laura for being his sister I mean aaa I don't think I really need to bring up the Brickster's Revenge. Wes edited the script (if I'm remembering correctly?) and as a result there are a few gems in there but it's killed by lifeless voice acting and animations, plus a story that's dumb and excuse plot-y. It's the weakest link in the LEGO Island series, I think we all know that.

Something you need to understand first and foremost is that making a game is a huge commitment; regardless of if it is a hobby or a serious project, it takes a lot of time, effort and dedication to see it through the end. While it's true that you can make a game in under a day, it would mean extraordinary amounts of concentration, and you wouldn't be able to give the game the polish or testing it deserves. If you're interested in making a game just out of boredom/a hobby, I recommend you search around, find an engine you like and then simply find YouTube tutorials to make games with that engine. They can be fun and rewarding, and you'll learn a lot in the process. If you're serious, you need to start by clearly listing what you achieve, finding an engine that has the capability to do what you want (making custom engines from scratch is difficult, as I'm sure Kirk?by is willing to attest to), and then you need to research the tools at your disposal so you can find the right method to do what you're looking for. Something you need to get into your head early is that retro video games aren't about the art style; in fact, the commonly accepted "retro" style has nothing to do with how 80s/90s pixel-graphic games looked. The reason these games are retro are because they all live by the concept of RISK AND REWARD. This games are brazenly hard, and the idea is that the player must do everything in their power to practice over and over again so they can overcome the challenge and feel proud of themselves, which in turn makes the lessons stick, and the game can continue pushing them. Balancing the learning process between being a fun learning experience the player loves and a frustrating mess the player loathes is EXTREMELY difficult. As a game designer, I can guarantee it's not something you want to tackle right off the bat. Your biggest issue is the lack of detail about your idea; you have some small nooks worked out, but you haven't actually thought out how the main gameplay loop works; what the player will want to achieve, what they can/can't do, what the challenge they have to overcome is, and what their reward for succeeding is. The loop is the key part of the puzzle that defines the core of your game, and will always keep you on track. Without it, your game can end up being inconsistent, and most worryingly, not fun. Honest opinion? Your first foray into game development should be to make game clones. It sounds silly and stupid, but trust me. Getting a clone to feel EXACTLY, to the very tinniest detail, like the original game is a challenge, but it will make you far better at appreciating the game design/development process. You'll learn why developers make the decisions they do, and in the years to come you'll look back and feel proud about what you achieved, instead of regretting something that didn't quite work and wasn't fun at all. I recommend you start with Mario. It's a 2D platformer (so on the lines with what you want to achieve), and there are many tutorials that will tell you how to accomplish it. Once your Mario clone is 100% like the original Mario (including the exact speed/mass, the transitions, health etc), you should start making changes, seeing what you can do to make the game more/less fun. If you get really good, you can start adding new features, such as the gun elements you want, alongside new graphics and audio. The key thing I want you to take away is to LEARN first, PRACTICE second, PLAY last. Not only is this how you, the designer/developer should act, but it's also ideally how your player will experience your game and its lessons. As for you, I find that you can't really make something unless you understand HOW the tools will help you make that thing become a reality. It's always nice and great to have a creative idea, but being practical about it is what makes the best games. Good luck, and have fun with it.

Whatever this is, boy am I looking forward to it! It could be in homage to LEGO Creator. However, from a graphic design point of view, given that the digger is yellow and black it's quite likely that the creators of the image chose those colours to match and work together pleasingly. Primary/secondary colours work great in that environment, particularly given their connotations, and LEGO doesn't produce purple or orange bricks as predominantly. Just a point on that note, although I personally think it is harking back to LEGO Creator. I imagine it's just a render and not representative of the actual graphics - from what I can tell, TT Games have always had rendered/CG covers. Although there are mods for Minecraft, for example, that produce that level of quality, but it requires a very powerful computer and it's unlikely TT wouldn't include lower graphic settings.

However vague the image in question may be, I can't help but feel some level of anticipation for it, for better or worse. I know it's not a good idea to say this just yet, but I'd wager it's the most immediately optimistic I've been for a LEGO game from TT since LCU. Once again, it's important to remember that it's TT Games we're talking about, but it definitely seems to have some of the same DNA as the older LEGO games. (I'm looking at you, Creator!) I expect that I shall be closely following the development of this in the future. (The only thing of immediate concern to me, is that it appears that by building, they may just be referring to the placement of prefabs. It wouldn't be a deal-breaker for me, but I wouldn't help but feel somewhat disappointed.)

    Mafia: The Game

I frequently engage in past-life regression, and I'm afraid, Mr. Parker, that suspicion falls squarely on your shoulders. Last night, I had a vision, of men, us, but not us, in some hostile clime in the days of yore. They were besieged by green-skinned hob-goblins, who sought to plunder willy-nilly their small fort. But these were not their greatest enemy. No, one of their own sought their blood. That same soul has recently shuffled off his mortal coil, as he did so then, when a great eye, fell and eldritch, saw him to an end. Now, he whom we called Xiron, was a decidedly unsuccessful killer. I find it hard to believe that any of us, save he who perished at Xiron's hand, and thus knew not of his murderers speedy demise, would consider him the greatest threat. I suspect that Mr. Parker has exacted his revenge, post mortem, post vitam.

Roles have been sent out. The game will begin as soon as I have received the selections of non-generic players. An epidemic. You never thought you would have to deal with this. Yet here you are, on your first day in the lab no less. You work for a pharmaceutical manufacturer- that's what you were told at least. The diseases, held in glass tubes lining the walls- they're just specimens meant for study. We're developing medicine to protect people from them, of course. No evil ulterior motives at all. But you're beginning to suspect that's not the case. Something went wrong- or right, depending on your outlook- and some of the diseases escaped. The entire facility is on lockdown, and you find yourself quarantined in a room with 5 other people you don't know, almost all of them new recruits. One of is one of the doctors of the facility, sent to train the newbies- but you don't know which one. And one of them might have other plans besides finding a job... An accident, they called it. But you know better. Someone did this. You don't just put all of the world's deadliest microorganisms in the same place and not expect someone to come looking to cash in on that. Steal the virus, sell it to the highest bidder- you've seen this plot in many a film before. You know what happens next. The thief will want to cover their tracks.
