New version of ROCK RAIDERS - update

I'm a bit conflicted with this project. I have mad, absolute respect for anybody who has worked on LEGO games, especially given their strict standards (and the fact that even in the late 90s 3D-games were difficult). At the same time, I've seen some major issues crop up during the past two years of theory and ideas. I think my biggest issue is the proposal itself. I'm a bit confused on how this is intended to work; are we just submitting content to go towards a full game? Are we applying for contracts? Is this a community design/develop thing that will be sold if it works out? I mean, upon reading your last post, I guess things have changed, but my point still stands; how is it that we can get involved if we did want to be involved? Another thing that confuses me is this game's unique pitch; I'm not sure what Rock Raiders 2 has for it that would set it aside from games like Minecraft. Rock Raiders had a very unique atmosphere which I enjoyed (there was a certain quiet, creepy desolation that made the tense lava chases more tense, the boat rides more calm and relaxing, and the exploring really fun). I also really liked the grid-based design, seeing as it makes certain gameplay elements slightly more predictable, while also adding challenge towards construction and approaching hazards. I feel a voxel game with over-bright colours would lose the things that made Rock Raiders stand out (especially given that LegoRR didn't really rely on its LEGO assets). To be blunt, if I were to join in on this, it'd be for the thrill of working in a larger-scale development that what I'm currently doing, and because I would like to see some of the experiences I had as a kid returned in a modern form. I'm just not completely sold that the direction has been set. I also have high doubts that this will appeal on the same scale as games like Minecraft; I'm sure a large audience exists, but I don't think this game should be made for popularity. It's a bit tough to be making a sequel to a very niche game, particularly when you have to strip away that big "LEGO" title that guarantees the sales. The key, at this point, would be to focus on why people would want to return to Planet U, and what a new sequel is capable of offering a modern audience. It's not my place to force my ideas onto projects like these, so I leave those questions for you to consider. I'm going to continue to reserve full judgement until more comes out about this. I'm sure others here have their own thoughts that will probably conflict with mine. I'd like to stay positive for once, since at least you've shown that you can release games (and decent ones at that, particularly since we're all gathered here because of one of your games).

Carmine Wheeler, Mob Boss of the Racing World

In a world where racing is the only thing that matters, one robot controls it all. Carmine Wheeler, notorious race fixer and gambler, has the whole world in his pocket. CEO of the largest wheel and tire manufacturing company, he has enough money to keep the PD and Courts in the palm of his hand, as well as fuel his gambling. If you ever take out a loan from Wheeler to bet on a race, he'll probably end up with it back in his wallet, while still wanting the amount you borrowed. --------------- Imgur Gallery Flickr Gallery Really pleased with how this guy came out. He was a really big leap for me, but I think I pulled it off. He sports a custom mouth decal, cigar, and expressive eyes. Definitely a MOC I am very proud of.

Le717 and Cire have pretty much answered in my behalf. There are many reasons why the upgrade was done, most are technical. It's not possible to revert. I haven't removed the upgrade notice because it's quite obvious the forum isn't done and there's still plenty of work I've got to do on it. And yes I have not had much time in my life these past months, it's been a bit of a roller coaster.

Grapheme/Cyrem did it, not me. He owns and manages the forum. I just help. Pretty much everything le said is correct. One of the big problems is that there is a lack of IP.Board v4 plugins available, and some that exist are stupidly expensive for what little they do. Grapheme has been writing some on his own but he doesn't have a lot of time. There is a lot of life stuff he's dealing with right now, some bad things and some REALLY good things, but it's not my place to say. PM him if you have questions or complaints. I can't do anything about how the forum looks. I don't have the knowledge and I don't own it.

New version of ROCK RAIDERS - update

This. You summed it up very well here - that unique atmosphere is crucial to this game. The soundtrack, (or almost the lack-thereof) is a vital part to this game that I think often gets overlooked. Shameless self promotion here again, but it will be the last time I'll mention it: I could do the soundtrack for Rock Raiders 2 and I could do it very well. However, I can't do it for free. This wouldn't be the first soundtrack I've created either. So Stewart, if you're reading this and it intrigues you, just let me know and we can talk. There we go - just wanted to make that absolutely clear Thanks for reading, - Polaris And of course in my post I forgot to mention that you have my full support Stewart! I for one think this is a valid project and one with a lot of potential, especially if you just narrow the focus a wee bit and take McJobless' suggestion of not making this game for popularity. One thing that I have learned through being a composer is that quality always rises to the surface. Anyone can churn out a product aimed at the masses, but it's true art that really connects with people.

Thanks for the responses, you have made me think, and evolving ideas I think is a good thing. I think that perhaps I have over been over stretching my expectations. Coming from a TECH background, I sort of expect everyone to have some gaming ability - because just about everyone that I know does! What I have had from you all is some good 'player experience / RR fan insight' and that has helped me change focus, so perhaps I should have considered this as an excellent opportunity for a Focus Group, and that is a great start. I really liked the idea of a fan built/ team effort game. It is always good to work with people who are self motivated, and the idea of an existing fan base behind a remake seemed an excellent start to a great new game. Now I am considering that I might need to separate the new ideas from the actual production, and now take more of a lead on the production. I can build a team and get the work done. I would really like to think that I have the support of RRU behind me doing this.

Needs a third option: No. In all truthfulness, the update was not a simple flip of a switch. IP.Board is a licensed software that Cyrem (not Cirevam) buys. He has put money into this new IP.Board version. Cyrem can't just "restore" the old software because it's tied to a license key, and that key is now only valid for this version. Installing this required server configuration and updates, meaning more money and time spent performing the changes. Also, we are technically using a beta version of the software. IPS v4 is now out (released in June), but we upgraded in April, so things in the final version are presumably better, but Cyrem has yet to update to the release (and I doubt that is a simple "extract zip contents and upload"). Further, did I mention that Cyrem works at IPS, has school work to do, lives a life, and manages RRU, not to mention probably other stuff? He's been flooded with work/school for a while and has not had the time to get RRU back up to speed. We didn't even have an RRU anniversary party this year. That kinda says how busy he has been. Also, a good amount of the forum features (IDK how much) he wrote himself, and he would have to rewrite them for IPS v4. I'm sure Cyrem had reasons to upgrade RRU to a beta software. I doubt it was something he did lightly, considering this is an active forum. However, he had good faith that we could endure through the bugs and issues until he could update to the final build. We've done it so far. Yes, I'm annoyed by them too at times (the post editor is unusable on mobile), but hopefully soon Cyrem will find enough time to bless us with an updated version of IPS. Until then, we just have to patiently deal with the issues. The damage is done. Broken topics won't fully be restored by reverting the software, even if it could be easily reverted. If you see a broken topic and the author is active, good grief, why not ask them to fix it? They might not even know it is broken. We can get through this. So far, we've done just fine.

    Minecraft Racers! Open Beta v0.02

Current version: Beta v0.02 This mod is under heavy development! Come back at least once every couple weeks to see if there is an update! I am working on a texture mod where I try to replace all textures with Minecraft textures. I made some progress with Imperial Grand Prix (Altough some textures need to still be placed in) Here is a video of beta v0.02: http://youtu.be/9Hmb2DeyGaE Here are some screenshots: ALSO! CUSTOM FONT/Background! Later, I will also try making custom sound and music. Download Beta v0.02 down below in the attatchment! The README file in the ZIP will help you installing and has some info on the mod. Have fun! LEGO Star Wars: The Complete Saga and the GHG

If you have ever have attempted to mod LEGO: Star Wars The Complete Saga, you may have discovered that the games characters don't have any texture files. Unfortunately, the textures were embedded in the GHG model files themselves. A quick look at the STORMTROOPER_PC.GHG file confirms these suspicions. Sure enough, after the 30 byte header of the GHG file, the header of the first texture file (DirectDraw Surface) begins with its image data following afterwards. Using a hex editor, it is possible to extract and edit each texture from the file. Below is the result of extracting one of the textures. However, editing or extracting textures via this method can be extremely time consuming and difficult for modders who do not know how to use a hex editor. So, in hopes of finding a better way of extracting these textures, I resorted to IDA Pro and Hex-Rays to decompile the games executables in hopes of finding code that might assist me in extracting both the textures and the models. However, IDA quickly ran into trouble. For some reason, IDA was unable to create any code from the data section, I pulled up the PE Sniffer from PE Tools and to my dismay discovered why IDA was unable to read the section. The executables code was being protected by Armadilo. Someone over at TT Games was smart enough to add an anti-decompilier so that we couldn't break into their code. I wasn't going to waste time trying circumvent the protection so I decided to continue my search. Fortunately after digging through the forums, I found a tool that would extract the GHG's into separate DDS and OBJ files. In comparison with NinjaRipper, the tool is much faster and easier to use. However, the textures are not applied to the models so anyone hoping to use these files will need to reapply the textures themselves. Also to my surprise, there are no tools that allow conversion back into GHG. It is my hope that Sluicer creates a tool to convert back or at least releases the source code for the GHG to OBJ software so that someone else may build upon that code to create a OBJ to GHG converter. For now though, I shall remain using NinjaRipper as for it provides a better output than Sluicers tool. Back to model ripping I go!

LEGO Star Wars: The Complete Saga and the GHG

I added just one line to the STORMTROOPER_PC0016.obj (that is the helmet) at the beginning of the file (line 2): usemtl STORMTROOPER_PC0000.dds and I got this result, if I open it with Noesis. Normally you have to add at least two lines. All uv-map data is in the files. I did not had the feeling that anyone is using my tool. So I did not put more energie in it. Maybe I did not upload the lastest version. From my point of view the ghg gsc files are very complex. There are a lot of relative pointer in them. They do not only contain textures, vertices and indices. There are also info for bones, materials, and many more where I have no idea what they are for. I will never try to create a ghg or gsc file. My tool does only use the position, normal and uv-map information from the vertices. But sometimes there are also boneweights and bonemaps. And there are different levels of detail in them. I once wrote a noesis script, where I also extracted the bones (no bonemap, no boneweight, no textures). I do not know to what format I should extract them. I once tried dae but that was a failure. Currently I am looking at fbx. But there is no good documentation (afaik).

    Problem in W10

While I could get a later version of Rock Raiders that runs without needing a disc, it'd be great if I can get my current studded-case version to work. I've installed WinXP (using the official 30-day trial version) on VirtualBox and successfully installed LRR. Upon running it the loading screen appears (whoopee, progress!) after which I get the following error: "Please insert the correct CD-ROM, select OK and restart the application" The game wasn't installed through my disc drive, rather I created a digital copy of the disc and mounted it on Daemontools which was installed on the WinXP machine. I've tried change the disc drive letter from F to D and I still get the same error... Is there some way to get the game to recognise the disc drive? If I can get this particular method working then I'll happily write up a detailed tutorial on it. EDIT: IT WORKS! Time to write a tutorial.

I wouldn't normally go as far as me either, but the other active senior members weren't willing to touch this topic with a 10 foot pole, so checked with them and posted for them. Though I wouldn't go as far as Alcom1, I do think they're kind of on the right plane of thinking - most of the members here, including myself, lack the expertise to effectively contribute to this project, or else we would have by now. We are the fans but we are not the game makers. I can really only speak for myself though, and though I could possibly contribute to this project with my music composition or sound recording skills, I don't work for free and would expect financial compensation, which might not be the position you want to be in Stewart. Still, message me if you are interested - I'd love to do a soundtrack to this game and I want to be as helpful as I feesably can. I still have faith in the project and I wish you luck Stewart. - Polaris

I'm not sure if this belongs here, since Skyboxes are gradients, rather than textures, but they change in-game visuals, so it's sort of fitting, I suppose. Not sure if this really counts as a mod since it's just a registry edit, but you can run LEGO Island in windowed mode simply by changing a "YES" to "NO". However, it's a bit... ... Glitchy. Especially if you set the value for island quality to zero.
