this isn't part of the "project" but it's still something I've made that's related, it's a very long cover/remix of the main LI2 theme, featuring all kinds of "variations" of the theme, the Walk variation, the unused "Town Bridge" Intro, the console versions (GBC, GBA, PS1) and the original version by Richard Wells. This took a long time, so criticism is always appreciated3 points -

I am not sure, if I get all of what you wrote, but I think it is an offset based encryption. I searched for texts in the old-files and searched for the matching values in the new-files. Then I sorted them by the new-values and detected equivalent positions. I searched for 0000 and lego. Ok so it doesn't look like a simple encoding. I've tried all the simple methods I can think of and come up blank - so far at least. Some statistical analysis of the ciphertext suggests it's probably strong encryption. Just looking at the byte frequencies: Min Max Mean Std. Dev Plaintext 0 16952 530.7 1860.2 Ciphertext 464 588 530.7 22.6 The plaintext is as you'd expect for a text file, limited byte range (alphanumeric) and lots of repetitions. The ciphertext is much more evenly spread over the whole byte range, clustered around the average. Going a bit deeper, we can look at the trigram frequencies (just of the TEXTURESUMMARY.TXT file since it's got lots of repeating text): Min Max Mean Std. Dev Plaintext 1 1384 21.75 98.23 Ciphertext 1 2 1.00 0.05 We can clearly see that the oodles of repeating bytes in the plaintext do not carry on over to the ciphertext at all, so that's probably a dead end. Making the (huge?) assumption that they are encrypted on a file-by-file basis, it's got to be a stream cipher because of CHEATS.TXT - if it was using a block cipher those 3 bytes would be padded out to a larger blocksize. Based on this, no IV is stored in the ciphertext either, so it's either a static IV, or none, or it's stored elsewhere and the files aren't encrypted one-by-one. Are there any other file pairs (same bytesize, reasonably sure they haven't changed in update 2), where the first character (of plaintext) are the same? Eg FILE1.TXT and FILE2.TXT, old versions (not encrypted) start with the same character (letter, number or symbol). This might give us a way to start, checking if their respective encrypted versions also start with the same character or not.2 points -

Yeah, as mentioned, the dugg map tells you what's ground. To clarify: the dugg map has higher "priority" than the surf map. And the wiki page for the surf map is slightly confusing, I think, because the numbers it uses for "ground" are irrelevant. (Or maybe we should just say LRR's map formats are confusing ). It works something like this (in ugly pseudocode): if dugg==3 or dugg==4: slimy slug hole else if dugg==1 or dugg==2: if surf==6: lava else if surf==9: water else: ground else if dugg==0: (whatever the surf map says) And a surf map value of 5 still means dirt if the dugg map is 0 (wall). 4 and 5 are both dirt in that case, not ground. Anything turns into ground if the dugg map is 1-4.1 point -

You also have to look at the dugg map. It contains information whether the tile is a wall or not. If it says the tile is a wall, but the surf-file says it's ground then the actual tile is a dirt wall. I think it also works the other way round, meaning the dugg file can also erase walls. Oh, and just played your game. It starts to look prety good, but could you please make it fullscreen instead of this tiny window?1 point -

With a little help from Le I moved this project onto GitHub. The most recent version of the project can now be found at any time at https://github.com/rystills/rock-raiders-remake Note that as Le pointed out this is essentially a dev version of the project, which means it may be unstable / non-functional at times. As per Le's recommendation, I will also be configuring the project to work with GitHub Pages in the near future for those who don't wish to download the entire project and run it locally just to run the most recent version every time there is a change, so keep an eye out for that. Additionally, due to minor project structure changes the URL to find the stable version of the project on my personal site will almost certainly be a bit different with the next update as well, but I'll be sure to adjust any links accordingly to avoid any confusion. Finally, my previous question still stands, should anybody happen to know the cause1 point -

You need to go ahead and put this thing on GitHub so I can help you out. (Bonus: we can host the game on GitHub too since it's all static content.
