    LEGO Nexo Knights

Opportune timing for this topic to pop back up, because: Knight is Coming 8 'short films' are going to be going up on the site in addition to the 20 episode TV series. Series has not yet premiered and Jestro had already said "IM SO GOOD AT BEING BAD" twice. I spy a drinking game for all you 21+ year-old jaded and cynical lego fans out there

LR2 Models Reused in Soccer Mania

Just something minor I discovered. I thought that hovercraft seemed like it was from LEGO Racers 2, so I thought I'd check, and sure enough: Although the texturing is slightly different along with an open cockpit, it is otherwise the same model. A red hovercraft appeared in another cutscene, and I might have also seen the game's mech models being used, although I'm not certain. Off-topic: The Brickster has his own "Haters Gonna Hate" walk

LR2 Models Reused in Soccer Mania

Silicon Dreams and ATD were sister studios, both owned by the Kaboom group, and... Wait, do we know for sure who did the pre-rendered stuff and FMVs for Soccer Mania? Anyway it's not the only thing shared between their games - for example, the bonus game music in LEGO Racers 2 is a remix of music used in the credits of some versions of LEGO Island 2 for PS1.

Rocket Racer inspired map in Unreal

Got bored one day and wanted to do something Rocket Racer related in the Unreal editor. Just a little test map inspired by the Rocket Racer track in Lego Racers 1 using Unreal Editor 2.1 and running on the first Unreal Engine. The map is also playable in the Harry Potter and the Chamber of Secrets PC video game. Bonus: http://imgur.com/a/qTYqz

Which LEGO Island game is your favorite?

There isn't a ton I can say that jamesster hasn't already covered. LEGO Island wins in my book because story and characters didn't come secondary to the idea of making a game, they were the point of the game. That just makes all the difference to me. Yeah, IXS is probably one of the better LEGO games we've had from a gameplay perspective, but we also have a really dopey Brickster whose goal has been upped to world destruction for no apparent reason, a Laura who speaks in serious monotone about how she just loves to patrol on her bike guys, and a Nubby who talks about Socrates because SEE HE TALKED ABOUT PHILOSOPHY TYPE THINGS IN THE ORIGINAL GAME SO SOCRATES WE TOTALLY GET HIS CHARACTER. The greatest emotion I can amount in regards to it is, "yeah, okay, that's nice." But on LEGO Island the characters are colorful and alive and Wes had a competent sense of humor and the Brickster is a goshdarn genius whose every word is laced with brilliance while also being a colossal jerk. And the characters have weaknesses and dreams and they actually act like they know each other and can talk to each other like human beings and I mean have you ever heard that line where Nick thanks Laura for being his sister I mean aaa I don't think I really need to bring up the Brickster's Revenge. Wes edited the script (if I'm remembering correctly?) and as a result there are a few gems in there but it's killed by lifeless voice acting and animations, plus a story that's dumb and excuse plot-y. It's the weakest link in the LEGO Island series, I think we all know that.

Which LEGO Island game is your favorite?

Either LEGO Island or Island Xtreme Stunts. Not sure I can choose which. LEGO Island feels really alive and animated. If you were to strip out all of the character interactions, there wouldn't really be much meat to it (five minigames and a couple more for when the Brickster escapes, and some stuff to click on). But they put a lot of care (perhaps the bulk of it) on the writing and animating the characters. While the other two games usually just put the characters on a standard idle animation and cycled through face textures as they talked (the voice actors probably mostly being whoever was around at the studio), LEGO Island had more carefully selected voice actors, and they animated every character's movement to match the every voice clip very carefully, even making that system to lip sync the faces to what the characters were saying. For 1997 it was really impressive... And still more than what a lot of games do today when it comes to animated characters (not referring to big AAA games with motion captured humans and all that). I also really like the sense of humor the writing has. And the soundtrack... Very nice. The other two games didn't really aim to do the same thing, or at least not as much of it - they tried to focus on fun gameplay. In the case of LEGO Island 2, I think it was trying too hard to be too fun, and ended up with way too many one-off minigames that are just mildly entertaining for a few minutes each at best - and I presume creating so many unique systems stretched the programmers thin on polishing any one element of the game (and indeed, a lot of stuff was cut... Maybe not enough). I also would have preferred a less linear structure. What if you had been able to go to any island, with the simple objective of collecting pages, however that might be? Island Xtreme Stunts felt roughly like what LEGO Island 2 was trying to be, but on a smaller scale. But that smaller scale let them polish things a bit more, and I think led to a much better game. It's still no GTA or Tony Hawk's Pro Skater, but I had a lot of fun simply exploring and finding hidden collectibles. The island also felt a lot more alive - the islanders doing things like having dance parties or driving vehicles, and even the smaller details (like seagulls on ledges that flew away when you got near, or things reacting to thrown pizzas) added a lot for me. It felt like a fun place to visit - like the first game. The soundtrack has some nice tunes, too. That's... A bit more text than I thought I'd write.

    Scrapped LEGO Racers Game (2009)

As some of you may remember, back in 2009, prior to the merge of multiple games into LEGO Battles, one of the games features on the boxes was LEGO Racers: The Video Game. This evening, while I was scavenging around the wastelands that are the internet, I came across the Behance portfolio of Donald Robertson, who had posted a collection of concept models and art from the game. (The full collection can be seen HERE.) After some more research and poking around his profile, it was discovered that he worked at Firebrand Games at the time, a company which specialized in racing games for the Nintendo DS. From here, someone managed to locate his website, which housed not only copies of the images and videos linked above, but early, in-game screenshots from the game, which we have never seen before. All in all, seeing as this is all stuff nobody has seen before, I thought it was important to bring this to people's attention. (Also, while people were following up on this tuff in the RRU Skype chat, somebody found http://project0.wix.com/comes-to-life, which belongs to Sergey Grey, on of the leads on the scrapped LEGO Racers game, who coincidentally ended up moving over to NetDevil later that year, to work on LEGO Universe.)

Anyways hope to catch up on everything I've missed related to RockRaiders. Hopefully Y'all haven't missed your favorite Energy Crystal and Chocolate Milk devouring Wolf too much.

    Sandwiches and the .cfg

There are some... interesting.. things about hunger and sandwiches in LRR. IDK how many of these are well-known, but they're interesting. I haven't tested what happens if you give any pf these properties to a non-raider... but I don't really want to know 1) The manual "Feed Rock Raider" can only be clicked if the Hunger level is below 100. It will set the Hunger level to its maximum. 2) There is no icon to show that a raider's Hunger level is at, say, 150. It is still a full sandwich. 3) "NoAutoEat" does exactly what it says on the tin. It's a .cfg level property. Very useful in tutorials, where it's almost spammed. 4) There is a level at which a raider will go back to eat his sandwich. I've no clue what it is, but it's 10-20 ish. It is not a percentage of max hunger level (a.k.a health). I don't think this can be changed (a.k.a set to another number). 5) Each sandwich eaten at the Support Station increases the Hunger level by 25. 6) A raider will continue eating until he is at his max hunger level. He will do this, being unfazed by most things (if he's on Action Stations he won't be fazed of anything). 7) "EnergyDecayRate" (in the Enyclopedia) is almost certainly the rate at which the Hunger decays per second. I know it controls lowering hunger levels, but I'm not quite sure about the "per" bit. It probably can be set to a negative number, but there's no point in that. I don't know what happens if you add it to, say, a Rock Monster but I guess the answer will be "BOOM." --- If you hate your raiders eating sandwiches, setting "EnergyDecayRate" to 0 is the best bet. 8) A raider's max hunger is determined by his health. There are several ways to increase health: - Put a raider in the .ol and add a new line: "Health 1000" or whatever. - Use a laser with a negative damage (either by Default Damage or "Pilot -5" or whatever, both in WeaponTypes) and hit him with it - (My favourite) Set HealthDecayRate to a negative number. This means the maximum sandwich level increases over time. This means less micro-managing in those three hour marathons. 9) High health and thus high hunger can be really really bad. This is because a raider's sandwich at the Support Station only increases it by 25, and if you have 2,000 to get from that... good luck! 10) However, if you see a raider running back to base thinking "FOOOD" you can grab him, tell him to feed himself manually, and voila! 11) Hunger has no noticeable effect on raider performance. (leastaways I haven't noticed it)

All About WRLs [Everything you see and do in the Worlds!] (Warning, Large Post)

Random fact noted: If a OBMGcLegoTerrain is in the world the game has a hard limit of 518 (or -518 if opposite side) in each direction of the map except vertical before it automatically kills (respawns) you. Meaning you can go [-]517.9999 and you won't respawn, but [-]518 or higher and you will. These numbers are in float. 517.9999 in Little Endian hexadecimal (what LR2 uses) is FE7F0144, and 518 is 00800144. What I'm not sure about yet is if these boundary numbers are set in the file itself, or if the game automatically detects if a terrain is in play. I've gone and checked both a TerraData.tdf, the LegoTerrain in the WRL, as well as LR2's executable and I found no traces of the 517.9999 or 518 values in LR2's Little Endian terms. For extra noting all worlds are the same dimensions.

Help needed: How to view maps

Just passing through, thought I'd re-mention this I did a while ago, I guess working proof of grappiegovert's GDB to PLY converter and the vertex colours. Although, all the texturing is manual and I don't really have time or technical expertise to automate it. I ended up using .dae files, if I remember correctly that format can hold references to the textures too? EDIT: Ok now I've had time to browse the forums some more this probably wasn't useful. I didn't know there was a track editor tool?! Awesome.

I think you guys are drawing a lot of conclusions about these characters from short 10-second clips that barely reveal anything. I could go into detail about how I interpreted the character videos, but that seems pointless. We'll see how these characters are written once the show airs, and we could all have been wrong. It actually might be fun to debate a bit, but mostly I just feel too lazy to delve into the issue right now. So I will instead say: Was that dubstep playing in the character vids?

It is his video, and it demonstrates what he's like. That's in no way a condonation of his actions. He wins at being an alpha male jock. Whether or not one ought to be an alpha male jock is another matter. It's like the BIONICLE Skull Villain-character videos. It would be silly for them to show the Toa defeating them, wouldn't it? It's troubling, but it's also a real part of human behavior, in particular of alpha-male culture. Now, if the narrative has Macy falling for him (in his initial, jockish state) then that would probably send the wrong message. However, the standard trope is for the main female character to reject the advances of the alpha-male lady's man, at least until he's reformed his ways. Because children are imbalanced, and boys subsequently have a rather stupid attitude towards girls. I never minded female characters, when I was that age, but I was the exception that proves the rule. It's not a status-quo that I like, but human xenophobia is nonetheless a fact of life. It oughtn't to be pandered to, but by the same token, one can do no good by alienating one's primary audience. Now, I don't think that the generic tomboy is the only way to go, but I do think that making an appealing (for 7-11 year old boys,) feminine, female character requires a good deal more skill than the hackwork that generally goes into LEGO's stories.

That's not the feeling I get from the trailer. It has to be noted that it frames Lance as the protagonist and victor of the narrative - two squabbling, obviously silly knights are fighting over the woman, then a "real man" who meets her needs comes in to sweep her away. Even if they go for the redemption arc for him, there is a really troubling underlying ideology to the treatment of the woman as a trophy that bothers me a lot. I realize this really isn't the place for a more in-depth discussion of representation in the media, so suffice to say I would respond by asking why the target can't be expected to accept a more nuanced female character, and wondering whether it is okay that that is acceptable by our modern standards.

    LEGO Nexo Knights

If I know my cliches, this isn't the message that will be sent. Rather, he'll start out as a shallow, unlikable, skirt-chasing jock, who in time is taught compassion, empathy, and common decency by his friends (mind, I have known this to happen in real-life.) I could be totally wrong, but such a character simply isn't an audience identification figure, unless your audience consists of a bunch of alpha-male jocks. Ah yes, the generic tomboy. A tiresome trope, though by the same token, I'm not sure if the average target-audience-age boy can be counted upon to appreciate a more nuanced, less macho, female hero. I see where you're coming from, but I don't think that's what was being aimed for. Rather, I think the point was merely to emphasize the juxtaposition of the Chivalrous Days of Yore with futuristic, post-industrial technology. It leads to some troubling conclusions, granted, but I don't think it was meant to be condescending. EDIT: For my part, I'll just try to ignore the story, as I have for Ninjago, Hero Factory, Chima, etc. The sets look interesting, and that's what matters for me. EDIT 2: I do admit to being annoyed by the lack of creative-world-building. LEGO seems to have taken a far too obvious route. Downloadable powers! Robot Merlin! Sigh. There's so much more that one could do with the premise. Instead, it rather seems to cheapen both genres.

As with Ninjago and Chima, sets range from 'okay' to 'pretty neat' while the story makes me want to curl in a ball on the floor and cry. LANCE!!!!! HES COOL CAUSE HE HAS BIG BIKE AND WINS THE WOMEN WHICH ARE OBJECTS TO BE FOUGHT OVER MACY!!!!! SHES A PRINCESS BUT DONT WORRY WE ARE BEING SUBVERSIVE AND NOT BAD BECAUSE SHE IS ALSO OF FIGHTS AND DOESNT AFRAID OF ANYTHING It looks like the generic knights are the soldiers from the original yellow castle? That's fair, but why is one of the good guys a Black Falcon? Also, really, really turned off by the WE HAVE TECHNOLOGY, THAT MAKES US SO MUCH BETTER THAN YOU STUPID NOT TECHNOLOGY HAVERS thing going on in the character vids. Like, really? In sum, "I don't know what I expected" EDIT: This is so right. How can the outcome be so wrong

Which LEGO Island game is your favorite?

How would you rank the various LEGO Island games? Which are your favorites and why? Personally, I believe the original LEGO Island to be the best. Even eighteen years later, it's still a fun game to play. My second-favorite is LEGO Island Xtreme Stunts. It has some shortcomings, such as Pepper being a silent protagonist, a not-too-good voice cast, and buggy controls. Graphically speaking, there seemed to have been a decline in quality since LEGO Island 2. But while LEGO Island 2 was just a sequence of mini-games, Xtreme Stunts felt more like a sequel to the original game. It focused more on interacting with LEGO Island's citizens and exploring the island. What about you?

The whole "Brickster being on parole so he can star in a movie" didn't make much sense either. It's disappointing that the Brickster was sort of Flanderized in both LEGO Island 2 and LEGO Island Xtreme Stunts. In the original game, he would always taunt the player character. In the sequels, he was written as taunting just for the sake of taunting. The original game's characters were designed to have different strengths and weaknesses, and the Brickster sure knew about those weaknesses. "Hey Pepper, want a tip? Here's one: learn to read!" became "Did anyone tell you there's a second gear?". LEGO Island 2 (GBA) is actually my third-favorite. It just felt like there was more to see and do throughout the story and after you defeated the Brickster. When you finish LEGO Island 2 (PC), everyone just says that there's still plenty of fun to be had on LEGO Island. You can't do anything else other than try to beat your high scores at the mini-games.
