Rock Raiders Wave Two?
liquidelectricity and 9 others reacted to emily for a topic
I was strolling through a Eurobricks thread on unreleased sets and came to this curious post. So I thought to myself "yeah, okay, big talk. Did you read that on Brickipedia?" But then they went on to say this: Suddenly the post is sounding a lot more credible. So I look back up at the post and what really strikes me is that he says that wave 2 would have had "other underground creatures." And then I remembered this guy! It's a slimy slug that was on the cover of a catalog packaged with big box LEGO games in 1999. It's not a model from the Rock Raiders game, though - in fact, it looks like it's design to be produced as a buildable figure, with a single-piece rigid body that has some eyestalks and studs stuck on. Seems a little excessive to design all of that just for promotional renders, no? So yeah, I think this guy may have been designed for that 2nd wave. What else could have been in it? There are at least a couple models in the PC game that would have worked as sets if they had chosen to produce them...10 points -

Looks like things went a little bit off the rails here. Throwing insults, regardless of direction is not going to accomplish anything here other than continuing to sour the waters. I will be direct on my feelings towards some of the mistakes that were made, they are not meant to offend. I will also state ways you could solve these issues in my opinion. - The association of Minecraft. People considered LRR unique, mentioning Minecraft threatens LRR’s uniqueness and the community did not want that. It was also spoken about in a time when many Minecraft clones were appearing. Yes, DDI changed directions on that, which was great, but some did not realise this had changed and the name “Block Raiders” still mentioned in areas didn’t help that. Solution: Remove any mentions of “Minecraft” or “Block Raiders”. Change promo resources to reflect this also. If LRR2 is inspired from anything, it should be inspired from the original game. - Big changes to mechanics. People loved the original LRR, the majority of people don’t want major changes to game mechanics, rather they want expansion, enhancements, refinements etc… The idea of vertical mining is an example of expansion that the community wants. And most of all, the modding. If someone wants to change certain mechanics that defined LRR, it would be on their own terms. Solution: Show the community the idea list and revise it if needed and put it somewhere where people can refer to it easily. - Lack of consistent, informative PR. Most people thought the project was dead, and again more people thought it was still going to be a Minecraft clone (as above). The lack of consistent regular communication, whether it’s just a drop in every fortnight or something to say “hi” and say what you’ve been up to, or weekly updates etc.. A lot of professional indie developers keep their communities in the loop, this is what this community wanted. Companies generally appoint someone to do this for them, so everyone else can focus on the game. Solution: This is pretty easy, keep everyone up to date. If there’s no updates, still engage the community to let them know the project didn’t die. - Visual Impressions. This is a HUGE factor as to whether people will suddenly have a good impression or bad impression. If you give them a bad impression, that impression has a greater chance of getting worse very rapidly. People’s impressions of the LRR2 website were very poor, it was half themed, it loaded slowly, there wasn’t barely any “new” content (other than the concept art)… just to mention a few of the many issues. (btw it’s also offline now). I offered my services to re-design it, but you weren’t interested at the time. Then there is the promotional content and the reusing of old resources mixed with minecraft stuff which didn’t help people’s opinions that a quality game was going to be made. Solution: Get all PR material re-designed professionally. - Facebook. I’m just adding this one here because well…. it’s a bit of a given. Facebook is a bad platform for proper discussions between fans and developers. If you want to do promotion, sure, Facebook might be perfect. If you want to talk about the game itself with fans, you need a platform for that, this is why most game developers employ Forums. Another thing about Facebook is that, a lot of the fans on RRU, do not use Facebook and won’t sign up to it. Solution: Keep your main communication platform where it’s already established, or find a proper platform designed for this style communication. --- And like Cirevam also mentioned above, this community likes specifications and other hard details.10 points -

It's always hard to talk directly to people like Stewart, because I feel like he does deserve some measure of respect, but at the same time I find myself disagreeing with a lot of what he's said. These are my major complaints with your first big post. The "You Have No Experience" argument is probably one of the weakest you could possibly use. Aside from the fact that you're making assumptions that those who are on the outside of the fence aren't able to make reasonable conclusions about the way the industry works and how games are made, you're ignoring the fact that everybody is entitled to share their opinion on this free forum, and you are free to provide evidence to support your arguments, but it is highly unprofessional to call people out because they are "under you". I won't debate the Wii Market because it's a fight that's not worth it, but needless to say I'm disagreeing with you as far as selling a million units being a big deal that lets you call people out for inexperience. You might have had a point if you were talking about well reviewed games. Then why have you not posted any proof to this? This is my biggest source of irritation. All throughout your post, you call out people for not contributing... It is here that you are demonstrating a level of arrogance; you want us to contribute yet you've not committed anything yourself. A website or Facebook page is not enough, Stewart. If you really want to confirm that you are making this thing real, you need to start by making concept builds, vertical slices or test content. Show, don't tell. The problem here is that you're taking ideas from places like Minecraft without demonstrating that they work. Every good game designer knows that playtesting as often and early as possible is the KEY to success, yet it seems like you instead want to focus on building a pool of high concepts without finding any way to link them together. It's nice that you've got bits of music and models from people around the place, but how do they work? Where will they be used? How will they improve the experience? Have you asked yourself any of these questions? The most active members of this site are fairly old and have their own lives to deal with right now. If you want us to put aside our own time to be a part of this, you need to give us a more physical reason to get excited. This is one of the first things you learn at Game Design School when you start pitching and developing ideas; did you miss that class? Firstly, it's amazing how quickly you shut down an idea that you didn't generate, yet you go on about how happy you are to discuss ideas with the fans. Hypocrisy, much? Secondly, you're making assumptions that Ringtail wanted to produce a directly 2D clone of the game, whereas how I read his post was "bring the spirit and some of the functionality of Dwarf Fortress to the LEGO Rock Raiders mould while keeping the 3D world aspect". You need to consider the fact that when people say "It's like X game..." they're probably not being 100% literal. Thirdly, you talk earlier about your business-mind and how much experience you have, and yet you can't see the financial boom in the 2D market? Are you unaware of what types of games are making the biggest killing in the mobile/indie markets right now? Are you unaware of names like Binding of Issac, FEZ, Braid, LIMBO and so on? You would think that if you're so business-focused, you would keep your mind open to these potential profit margins. Then why haven't you demonstrated this to us by showing us deadlines, timelines or any other organisational tools? Nobody here knows when you plan on actually working on the game, which is a major contributor to the "he's not going to go through with it" mentality around here. If you want to prove you mean business and actually drum up some decent ideas/help, you damn well better prove that there's action behind the scenes and that you know how your future outlook is. This is the complete opposite advise that is commonly given at every other game's studio. Listen to any developer from one of the big publisher studios, or from the tiny indie studios. Their GDC talks constantly revolve around the idea of getting into producing content as early as possible, so that you, not your audience, can be sure of what you're doing and where you're going. It's lethal to assume you can just push away playtesting and demoing the game, because you won't get the necessary feedback on your execution of the ideas until it's too late to change them. --- I've finished 6 games as a student/indie dev (for clients, so no public releases). Nothing I've made looks great, but I'm trying to look for some real world work that will lead me into a golden opportunity with a AAA developer. I need something. I'm sceptical of this offer, however, because you haven't shown me that I'm going to get a return, not in money, but in quality experience. You talk about management and planning, you've failed to show it. I would love to say "I worked on a successful LEGO fan-game" or "I worked on a sequel to a classic LEGO game", but I have no guarantees that working with you would pay my rent, contribute to my resume or be a positive experience. If you can address my complaints without calling me a "whiner", then I may consider actually building potential prototypes, level designs, story stuff etc for you. But I need some kind of acknowledgement that you actually give a damn, rather than trying to cash in on a community and some current fads in gaming.9 points -

You basically told Lair of Ringtails that his opinion was entirely invalid because he had never made a multi-million dollar game. You also implied that all of the users of this website are unprofessional at being game developers... which is a little silly since with a couple notable exceptions, we're all just hobbyists who hang out and poke at games. I do not deny that this would be some Seriously Cool Stuff if it should ever happen. And a lot of our feedback boils down to, the plan as we knew it was flawed, the models and stuff were of questionable provenance, and some of us even tried to suggest ways to fix it. You asked for input, and I remember many users giving it. Whining? I see a fanbase alienated by combative and unreliable contact with a developer that has disappeared for months to years at a time and gets upset at someone for not magically knowing about something that we were never told about. Of course people will feel unhappy, and voice this! It's only natural for humans to do this. I see nowhere where it is stated that you must be forced to do something, but I do see quite a bit of places where feedback you asked for was given... and it was more negative than you expected. You were the first to stop treating people with respect, by acting extremely condescendingly towards a couple of members. Thus, people lost respect for you. Respect must be earned, and you may find you will need to earn some respect back. Ninjabread Man moved approximately 0.08 of a million USD. That's 80,000 USD. Worldwide. It's also the very definition of Shovelware. As a QA tester in an international game development team, I've had some experience watching game developers working with texture artists. From first request to final texture, it took several weeks and several rounds of tweaking and testing in-engine. In addition, the textures were paid for. You never mentioned whether any of us would be paid for our work. If we wouldn't be, no amount of favors or "exposure" would really properly remunerate us for professional work for a presumably professional, paid product. So, what I'm getting from this is... you're fine with paying us, but you don't want to, thinking that just being fans would sufficiently motivate us. This is not how people work.4 points -

I'm just going to chime in here and ask everyone to stop throwing insults around, be they unprofessional ones or professional ones. There have been issues with regular updates, I'm not going to just look past that. There have been other issues as well as many have pointed out. But let's please stop throwing them back and forth. I don't see how either of the sides flaming back and forth with the issues have improved this situation. Right now we need be constructive, and what most of this discussion is, is destructive. The more animosity spread around, the less likely the interested parties will stay interested. I'd love to see this project come into fruition, but not in this manner. I'm not trying to be all "let's be friends, guys". If there are problems, let them be known, but without all the snarky comments and nitpicking. If that continues, especially on the biggest existing community that would support such a project, then people are going to leave. Stop the insults, even if it's being general. In my personal opinion, if you need to bring up issues, please bring them up like Cyrem has - cleanly show the issue, present solutions, explain clearly, but without the bashing on people. LRR is almost 17 years old, most of us being significantly older than that. Let's show a little maturity here. I know I'm exactly qualified saying all of this, as I've been highly inactive for the past while, and haven't always been the most mature about things either before, but I hate visiting this forum and seeing things like some of the stuff said in this thread. Stop the insults, please.3 points -

Been plumbing the depths for old LEGO animation today. Found some interesting stuff! - DUPLO tape from 1991 with significant CGI sections. Possibly the first example of computer-generated LEGO animation? - LEGO Creator tape from 2001. It feels like its much older, though, and has some lovely old-school stopmotion. Unfortunately, the video appears to cut off before the end. - The tape that comes with the Technic Power Puller from 2000. Not animation, but still neat! Also came across this again, but it's not really new. I did find the Creator tape on eBay, so if someone is inclined to buy and upload it, they will become a Certifiably Cool Person in my book. But what may be even more interesting is this thing. From the look of the back it's CGI, and it also has that Duplo Spyrius robot??? very interesting, not sure if I want to see it or the rest of the Creator video more.3 points -

I think the best thing to do at this point would be to post a rundown of where the project is these days. Given how many and how quickly ideas were being discussed, and then the silence, it's a bit unclear what the project is currently envisioned to be - and given the website went offline and Facebook went inactive, most people assumed it had been abandoned entirely. I think people will be able to give more helpful reactions if they know more about what we're talking about.3 points -

I am not a superior human being, and nothing I have said implies that, but I am the developer for Rock Raiders. I was asked and encouraged by RRU to do a sequel. I was told you are all big fans, who are spending time, trying to re-code the game, creating HD graphics, models and animations, and attempting to MOD the title and keep it compatible with modern machines. I was ASKED if we could create a new version with new content and features that this great modding team can use. I can do that, I can create another version however I like, but instead I have opened the doors so YOU can have input, you can get involved in a real live physical project. a project that you supposedly love and want to get involved in. That is the sort of opportunity most gamers would love to have. Real input on a real game. For me th9is process has been two folded, I loved RR and I want to redo a new version, I love all your input where it is positive, creative, inspiring and more heads are better one, so lots of feedback is going to get us a better project, this is the good side. Then we have the whinners, who for some reason think that they now own me, and have a right to dictate how I spend my time and money and that they who have no experience or capability are suddenly game design experts, they believe they should have the decision over what goes in the game or doesn't and also to throw out personal insults just because they think its clever rather than realize its petty and insulting. How about when you start paying me then you can dictate to me, until then this is an opportunity for both of us and we should instead treat each other with respect! If I wanted to do a shovel ware game, It would already have been out and made me another million bucks, I would not be spending my time asking fans what they want, and how they want to do it. Throwing ignorant insults out is not productive for any of us. I want a good game and asking you for you input, getting you involved seemed like a really good idea. This is expensive in time and money for me, it is far quicker and cheaper to go to an experienced artist and say give me 8 texture, and I will have them tomorrow. Instead I am spending far more time and effort discussing often irrelevant and minor details. I have no problem paying for artists and programmers, I would expect to set up agreements for fees or royalties or combinations of both, that is not an issue, but at the moment I am not getting fans with ability coming forward (apart from the few I have already mentioned) I believe a motivated fan will be far better on this project than someone I employ just for a wage, if you don't want to participate then fine - don't - I am not forcing anyone to do anything they don't want to do, but please don't go around insulting me and others who do want to create something good. thanks for the condescension lmao, now I really regret ever trusting you guys. I know with typing it is hard to tell emotions, this was serious not condescending. I have been in games since the 8 bit computers, we built ourselves at home, I love this industry, I have literally given hundred of people jobs in games. Some of the best artists and programmers got hired without demonstrable ability but hired just for their enthusiasm, I am genuinely pleased for anyone who gets a break an opportunity to live their dream. I don't understand your criticism and hate, I am offering to redo a game you love and asking for your input on doing it! How do I become the bad guy? if I ignored everything you all wanted and said I would understand it, but I am trying to involving you, and taking crap for doing it!2 points -

Gonna say this as straightforwardly as possible: This entire reply is bad. Throughout the entirety of this post are examples of you trying to claim to be a superior human being because you did some games once (some of which are, simply put, shovelware), and all this comes across as is trying to big yourself up. At one point you complain about the lack of people on here contributing to this project when, y'know, you (and this game) LITERALLY fell off the face of the earth for an entire year. What did you expect us to do, keep working on a seemingly dead project in the hope that you'll suddenly reappear with a finished project? Also, how are you actually gonna be recompensing the people on here who do end up contributing to this project? Because if you're planning to sell this game as a commercial project without paying the people who put work into it on here fairly, then boy you're in for a world of pain. I'm not telling you to pay them now (that'd be a dumb idea, especially since we have no idea whether this thing will be a finished project one day), but if you've got it into your mind somehow that the members of RRU and the internet in general will work for you for nothing, think again. So yeah, I'm pretty much 90% sure that this project is just another piece of shovelware that's only RR-related to try and cash in on the name in the vain hope that we'll blindly buy anything with Rock Raiders slapped on it. Yes this post is really harsh, but please at least try and take all of this in.2 points -

Captain Indigo: Objectively the Best Official LEGO Comic
Quisoves Potoo reacted to lol username for a topic
We've never had a proper topic on this? Really? Ok. Let's fix that. The year is 1980. A few years prior, in 1978, LEGO had launched the first themes to feature modern minifigures (Town, Castle, and Space). Now they've just released an idea book starring what we know to be the first named minifigures, Bill and Mary. This idea book depicts the two characters on an adventure through LEGOLAND, and also includes many stickers, including torso decorations for your own Bill and Mary minifigures. Scans of the book are available in many places online, but here's trusty 'ol Peeron's gallery: http://www.peeron.com/scans/6000-1/ Nowadays, this idea book is considered a classic by AFOLs. It inspired the LEGO Adventure Book, and several full-sized layouts based on the book have been created for LEGO cons. The end. OHOHOHO. BUT NO. IT WAS NOT THE END. OH HOW IT WAS VERY MUCH NOT THE END. In the Spring 1983 issue of Bricks n Pieces, a comic appeared. It starred Bill and Mary - now renamed to Captain Indigo and Lieutenant Polka Dot. And at first, it stayed faithful to its idea book inspiration. However, Bricks n Pieces was a magazine that only received three issues per year - Spring, Summer, and Autumn. Captain Indigo ran from Spring 1983 to Spring 1989. Nineteen magazines, each with one page continuing the story (slightly less, actually - the first magazine only had the comic running across the bottom of two pages). Needless to say, it didn't take long for the 1980 idea book to become irrelevant. What was the result? First, I'd recommend that you: READ THE COMIC YOURSELF Seriously, it'll only take like ten minutes. (Most of the scans are from Brickset's collection, but the last three are from miniland.nl.) However, if you are not yet convinced that your life would be improved by accepting our lord and savior Captain Indigo into it, and are unfazed by spoilers (or you just don't care to read it in its entirety)... Allow me to post some highlights. MISC LINK DUMP: http://www.brickshelf.com/cgi-bin/gallery.cgi?f=548178 <- Brickshelf uploads by Sadie, in case there's ever some freak incident where imgur goes offline forever but Brickshelf remains It seems that at least from August 1985 onward, the comics were written/drawn by Alan Jones: https://uk.linkedin.com/in/alanjonesart https://www.facebook.com/AlanJonesArt/photos/a.632222250153329.1073741825.172379789470913/682431691799051/?type=3&theater https://www.facebook.com/AlanJonesArt/photos/a.632222250153329.1073741825.172379789470913/744842502224636/?type=3&theater Going by how the art style also changed in 1984 (starting at the comic where they go back in time), I'm gonna guess that at least three different illustrators worked on it at different points. cheat-code Noun (plural cheat codes) (video games) A line of text or series of commands which can be used to change a game's behavior, alter a characters's looks and abilities, skip levels, or access other hidden features. Cheat codes are different from actual modding. They are usually added by the developer, that, yes, can change values and add effects. While with modding, you add things that that were not originally in the game files, such as non-vanilla characters, levels, items, abilities, textures, and sounds.1 point -

Ringtail, congrats on getting your job, I wish you good luck. Unfortunately is is very easy for someone who has never worked on a game, never run a team of developers, artists, animators, musicians, never published a title that has sold over a million units, to give their inexperienced opinion about work, content schedules, that you actually have no experience about. I know you will learn a heck of a lot now you are actually in the business, there is so much more to writing and publishing a game, the whole business side of considering sales, distribution, and marketing, are essential areas you have even less experience in. There is so much more to a project than posting ideas or pithy comments on a blog page. Firstly we HAVE tried to engage the community in designing RR2, the minecraft concept was just that, a concept, that we proposed and some liked it, however the majority did not, so we decided NOT to go with the Minecraft style - that is called discussion, debate and listening to YOU the RRU fans. You all had a choice, you had input and we listened. Not all your ideas are good - in your new job you will learn that the world doesn't revolve around you and your ideas for copying 'Dwarf Fortress' (your shovelware concept!!!) will be responded by thats 2D, that is a retrograde step, not an enhancement. But from others, who wanted to get involved, we did get a lot of good feedback and constructive ideas, and most of what you listed as wanting, we have actually said we would incorporate. Multiple layers, water and lava physics, better AI, better route finding, easier modding, new dirt types, new vehicles, HD models & meshes & textures. New creatures. And I sincerely thank all those that came up with these and more ideas. This input is what we need, it is your chance to have a real involvement. However ideas are the really easy part, actually getting a project completed is a far greater task. After good feedback I wanted to include the RRU team in working in and on this project, I put out multiple requests for art, programming, music content and I have got virtually no response. Some like shadowblaze did produce some music, (thank you, it is appreciated) RockMudder also created one model, perhaps 10% done, as it still needs fixing and textures, and animating. (Again thanks, I appreciate his input). Fush, cirevam, and others have send model designs - I like these and we will use them!(we need these modeled and textured) Instead of being negative, moaning about other people not doing stuff, how about spending the time actually being creative and productive, you currently don't have the ability for a main game, but a level editor, is probably in your capability, you could have helped with this but you chose to do nothing, but then moan at other who are trying to help!!! it really annoys me when people who can help, choose to do nothing and instead moan at those who are doing things, what a waste! When you get more experience you will find that one of the reasons the other teams attempts have failed is they have not planned and organized enough at the pre-development stage. Many years of experience has taught me not to rush into demos, which look pretty but are not functional, until I am sure of what we are doing and that we will be able to complete it, then is when we start. The phrases, Sharpening your axe, before you cut down the tree, failing to plan is planning to fail, are true. Experienced developers who reliably finish their work, know planning is a priority and it is foolish and wasteful, to start a project without being sure you can and will finish. I was trying to get members of the original RR team back on project, and I have had upto four agreeing, but working around their existing schedules is proving difficult. I will again ask for anyone who can help to send in an application, I would love to have you the fans on the team, your continued input would be great and appreciated, and its a good opportunity for you to showcase, and get your first step in the business, but I am realizing that part time inexperienced development is not a reliable way to create games, I am leaning towards a full time development team, but that then requires a bigger more costly plan, but it will be a guaranteed development and release. Be a winner not a whiner, please be part of the solution.1 point -

Tinnitus in my right ear, either because of a buildup of earwax or hearing damage (I need to have a doctor actually get rid of the deep stuff).1 point -
Custom Bricks for LDD

The last part I was working on got added in the last LDD update... So now I'm working on this one: The models are almost finished (I convert LDraw files to obj but they have a lot of gaps and need cleaning-up). For the collisions and connections I haven't started yet, I'm still working on my software to help create the xml file and I don't feel like doing this one by hand.1 point -
Texmod
Zed reacted to Pollywanna for a topic
Since the game still refuses to load unpacked resources as of the latest update, I thought it would be a good idea to spread awareness of the one aspect of the game we can still mod: textures, thanks to TexMod! TexMod is a small program that intercepts textures loaded into memory while your game is running, and allows you to save them to disk. Additionally, you can create packages to sideload into the game that override certain textures. It's very easy to use, and very useful for games whose modding abilities aren't all there. You can download the program here; it was abandoned by the developers a few years ago and is under the GNU GPL, so there are no problems uploading it here. There is a trick to getting it to work with Steam games; copy Texmod.exe to (C:\Program Files (x86)\Steam\steamapps\common\LEGO Worlds). Rename the LEGO_Worlds.exe to, e.g., LEGO_Worlds_M.exe, and rename Texmod.exe to LEGO_Worlds.exe. Now, when you launch the game, Texmod will open instead; in package mode, select LEGO_Worlds_M.exe as the game, load whatever TPF packages you want, and away you go! I've created a TPF of my Infomaniac texture mod; the face replaces the explorer's face, and the torso replaces the farmer's torso; it also has a blank white texture that overrides the female scientist's legs, since there are currently no plain white legs in-game. Get that here. He has six different facial expressions and uses the explorer's animation set. To use, just open up the TPF package in Texmod and launch the game! Everything should work right out of the box. Post your own texture mods rendered as TPF files!1 point -

Monster idea: Crystal crawlers, they look like regular crystals but the color is a bit off... if you come too close they will walk to a raider and explode. (I have that one in LRR- special ops)1 point
