POLYGON ATTACK: The LEGO Animation Thread

So we've got a cool topic for retro LEGO media in general, but sometimes I've found myself wanting to post about more recent stuff and not really found a good venue for it. So I figured, why not give a thread like this a try? I know that there are at least a couple of other people around that brave even the roughest of the Lego shows and series when they come out, and maybe you all would like a place to talk about them some too. Make what you want of the thread: from the Animagica Lego Movie to the Animal Logic Lego Movie, official stuff, unofficial stuff, stopmotions, CGI. Whatever tickles your fancy! ...but now for the real reason I wanted to make this thread: this happened and it's so bizarre and I don't know where else to put it: https://pbs.twimg.com/media/CxuR7eiWIAA4fjD.jpg:large They paid two different crews to animate the same special. "as an experiment." what kind of budget is ninjago running on? Is this going to be CGI too? Is it going to match the normal one shot for shot (aside from the different starting scene)? How do they benefit from doing this in the first place? this feels like the sort of thing that you read about on the lost media wiki or something and there's an intense debate over whether or not it exists because the idea is so absurd. but it's real. and soon enough, I guess we'll see it.

    "Path-finding"

    From the album: SFM stuff/Screenshots

Once again, the Rock Raider's path-finding incapabilities lead to many lost lives. A recreation of this image which, in turn, was inspired by this edition of 'Insane Raiders' (by Arthuriel). Enjoy!

Also, I know Ringtail told me not to do any more meme-based things (whether referencing one or making one up from scratch), but I made this because... ...well... In all honesty though, as I soon as I saw this facial expression on Xiron's Rocket Racer model, I felt like I should take the opportunity to do something with it (even if its not impressive). EDIT: "Path-finding" New render (that is slightly more serious)! Yet another piece of LRR content, based on a previous drawing of mine which was inspired by issue #2 of 'Insane Raiders' by Arthuriel. So Xiron has sort-of "suggested" that I could put some of my LEGO Renders here. So here are a few of them, all in not-4K quality; ...but before I show any new stuff, I'm going to quickly skim through the ones I have shown in the Gallery.... "Mining Alone" This was a one off render I made a few weeks ago. I never revealed it since I wasn't sure where to put it, where lots of people would see it. But I'm really glad I did put it up on RRU's Gallery, as the response I got encouraged me to make and post more stuff like it. "The Pit" If you ask me, LEGO Rock Raider's title track 'Atmosdel' feels extremely atmospheric and, don't ask me why, the quick music extract near the end it makes me feel like the tune was stolen from some year-2000 alien blockbuster movie. It is just too dramatic and I love it for that. So, inspired by this track, I imagined a Rock Raider stumbling upon a huge cave that went deep towards Planet U's core, like the one in the Waterfall cutscene of LRR. I wanted to make an animation out of it, but I settled on a quick little image. I like to think this is one of the best renders I've made to date. (And now for a few things I haven't posted on the Gallery) "welcometospace1" I just felt in the mood to render something in space. I considered making a horrible looking version of this render and naming it "LEGOS IN SPESS 4 LEEEKD", but I thought better of it. "kindoffunny" This was a series of images I planned to cobble together to make something like the "Driving, it ain't like skateboarding" picture I did a while back. Although I never completed it, so here are two random and stupid renders from that: "legoyatzee1" A quick one off render, recreating Ben Crosshaw's likeliness as seen in his Zero Punctuation series. "YOUWINWAFFLES11" A silly little thing I threw together as a joke. It was used for this post.

    LEGO Island REDUX

Well, I just tried to recreate Papa juggling three pizzas, but suddenly I got lost and confused about which pizza was which. I gave up when I discovered I would've had to redo the entire thing. This was as far as I got as recreating it: (And no, I'm not horrible at animating flying physical objects. I was copying the flight path of the Pizzas in the intro, frame for frame) I place most of the blame on the quality of the intro, or just when two objects/items overlap each other, or how messily animated the intro is...

    1. I think it might of helped to had the head tilted down a bit if you wanted to have a less "spaced out" look. So looking at where he's drilling, not above. 3. Oh, I just though Rocket had huge eyes for whatever reason (lack of oxygen?). xP And now it's mine turn for a new picture: Skating Duo Pepper and that one skater girl that's on Worlds hang out to show off their tricks. I attempted to adjust the topic title so it wasn't just 'classic' games exclusives, and I also added the word "content" in it to make it more clear that it isn't INGAME screenshots (scratched because it's not like you can "render" in these game internally anyway). After serveral readjustments I just hope the title is okay now. Picture comments: 1. I like how in that Raider is like totally zoned out while mining. xP 2. A new cavern has been discovered! ...but by no means does it look safe! 3. Is that Rocket's new ride for LEGO Racers: Space Edition? 4. Oh my, I was NOT expecting that face! 5. Much bright. ARG MY EYES. 6. WafflesWafflesWafflesWaffles - I should really replace that "eggo" with "Xiron's" sometime.

There's also multiple ways for it to be implemented into the game. The "easiest" way would be to simply show it as a video file (like the original). However, the coolest or "best" way, since Unity can import animations from a variety of software, might be to import each animation separately and play them all back dynamically in-engine. Similar to how lots of modern video games have cutscenes that are performed in-game in real time (example: GTA V https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=8V1s3-M1FMw) If we went the second route, there would definitely be a lot more work involved, but it also opens up the ability to have individual character/objects animations done by different people in different software. Then everything would come together in one scene and be played back while Unity controls the camera, lighting, and island. Edit: Also, going the second route could really show the "crowd developed" nature of the game, with each member's contribution being different. I think it potentially be pretty awesome.

Does anybody here remember Clutch Powers?

Clutch Powers is weird because it came out at that liminal stage where long-form Lego animations were still uncommon, but were just about to start flooding the world in an endless stream. So like, it was all "cool! the first ever lego movie!" and it seemed like it was going to lead into something more directly (like, idk, more dtv lego movies) but instead the ninjagos and starwarses and lego movies just started parading in from their own independent paths and clutch is left as this kind of bizarre anomaly that doesn't have any real successor to its name, directly or spiritually. You might even say it....... works alone

    I have some more LEGO!

I've been in Skegness for a week. I bought these in a charity shop on the last day there for £7.99. There's quite a lot of pieces missing, but the Star Wars set is most complete. No manuals are in there, but there is some paperwork. There's also some parts not from either of these sets in there. What the pictures don't show, is just how badly the boxes are warped. I wanted to save the boxes from some kid wrecking them further.
