Not a joke! Not an illusion! The LEGO Message Boards are done. Kaput. Toast. None of us 'round here are huge fans of the LMBs, I know, but they've been a fixture of the Lego site since, like, 2003, right? Pretty big deal that they are finally at their end.9 points -

BIONICLE RETURNING 2015

The Hungarian publication of Tale of the Toa is apparently majorly longer than the English print. As the poster points out, there are some clear indications that this was original material written by Hapka that was then cut, not weird stuff Scholastic Hungary just decided to throw in (though that would honestly be just as amusing). My guess is they decided on a new shorter page length for the series because KIDS ATTENTION SPANS, AM I RIGHT? Hapka's books contradict 2001 materials a lot because she doesn't seem to have been given them for reference, but unlike Greg she writes the Toa like characters so I'm really eager to see just a bit more of what she was doing. Thankfully, the person who discovered this is amazing and is re-reading the entire book to translate the Hungarian edition and highlight the edited sections. There is a ton, and you can read the first two chapters right here. It seems like a lot of the stuff the cut so far is related to the Toa's twisted memories of their past - memories that, naturally, don't mesh at all with what Greg would later write as the Toa's history a series of flashbacks in 2008. Here it seems as if the Toa have already dealt with Makuta wherever they were prior. There's also two instances where jargon is cut - there's a Kahu in chapter one and a Madu tree in chapter two. Might have been selected specifically to ease up on the number of words they were dumping on kids. Tahu's anger issues also get treated with a little more depth and definitely feel more complete than how they are in the (in retrospect, very pared down) English version. Chapter three seems like it'll be coming soon, but I'm excited for chapter four, where Lewa challenges Gali to a race! This marks the third media that independently depicts a sort of rivalry between the two and It'll be cool to see how it plays out.4 points -

I'm with Cyrem on this one. Give it the original UI and leave a new UI to mods. Better idea: make your revised UI a mod. You'll be more inclined to make your hooks and whatever more usable because you'll end up making it with the same tools everyone else has access to. You can even bundle the GUI mod with the base download if you wanted.3 points -

Sic transit stultitia mundi... Much as the historical-pack rat in me would like to see them stay, I can't blame LEGO for closing the LMBs. Aside from them being the lackadaisical cesspool they presently are, they require lots of time and money to do what plenty of folks will happily do for free nowadays. This wasn't the case for much of their lifespan, obviously, but now any chucklehead can create a LEGO fan forum gratis, using ProBoards or some such software. And as others have already remarked, it will be amusing to see the squirming, foaming tide wash up on the shores of Eurobricks, BZPower, et al. Especially seeing as that first one is age-restricted...3 points -

https://www.lego.com/en-us/aboutus/news-room/2017/january/lego-boost/ https://www.lego.com/en-us/boost This fall Lego brings to us a brand new robotics-based product: Lego Boost! The parts included can build you five different models that show off the different sorts of programming stuff you're able to accomplish with the free app that commands the robotic bits. This reminds me of CyberMaster in that it's a budget/kid-friendly alternative to Mindstorms, but the similarities end there. What do you think? Does that cat look as creepy to any of you as it does to me?2 points -
A Juncture

With the Nexus Farce: Ingress of Imagination entering its final, if belated, chapters, and the Elimbies poised to collapse next month (I'd like to believe there is some causality between the two), I find myself at a juncture: what should I waste my time on next? I have a few ideas, including those listed in the poll above (that question is multiple choice, so mark any of those that sound interesting and/or say in the comments). I enjoy crafting narratives and building models, and the two mesh together pretty well. I have a vague story arc plotted out should I continue the Nexus Farce, but I'd also like to try my hand at something a bit more freeform. The Nexus Farce was written to be obscenely verbose as a joke, though in hindsight I'm a bit more critical of this choice. In spite of its numerous flaws, I'm still rather proud of IoI on the whole. Maybe one of you knows better and would be kind enough to explain why I'm wrong; I'm serious about that. While I do this for my own entertainment, it can be satisfying to get feedback on something that's been so long coming. Really, even if you just got a wry chuckle, or none at all, from the Nexus Farce and related material, I'll take any criticism you guys have.2 points -

The lego website my is earliest memory of the internet, from back in the 90s, and the very first version of the LMB was my first experience of talking to people online and being part of a community like that.... and online communities are something that have had an enormous impact on the path my life has taken and the opportunities I've had. While I haven't posted on the LMB for probably 15 or 16 years and everything I did post disappeared a long time ago, I can still trace back a lot of the things that have happened in my life back to that terrible little forum. So it's a shame to see it go. I'm still not over ibricks closing tbf.2 points -

My personal preference would be to keep it as true to the original game as possible whilst making sure everything is modifiable as possible. That way if people do want a new UI, (among other things) it's just a matter of making some changes to the remake.2 points -

Ah, the ol' Westwood-style RTS. Tiberian Sun was my favorite! And the Rock Raiders should be glad their Energy Crystals aren't Tiberium crystals I like moddable GUIs. Unfortunately, GUIs are one of the least moddable parts of most games. Probably because they mix data (usually moddable) with code (usually not moddable, unless there's scripts), and it takes some effort to get that separated out. Idk if modern Unity has this too, but some engines like Godot allow loading GUIs from data files containing the Button/Image/TextBox/whatever objects with their positions, sizes, event function names, and other variables. That's just a lot more work than implementing the GUI inside the engine. Maybe not worth it for a simple game?1 point -

I could add an option to have two GUI's, the one from the original LRR and the Reloaded version so people can choose between which layout they want. Command & Conquer series (Generals was an exception to that rule), Emperor: Battle for Dune, 8Bit Armies among others that have top right minimaps, although I do play other games that have the minimap on a different locations but those have a different GUI than I am working on currently.1 point -

For those few, if any, of you who were eagerly awaiting the continuation of Nexus Farce: IoI, I give you chapter 13. There's a couple reasons for the delay, school being one, and a structurally unsound Venture Koi interior another. The Venture Koi interior is, in many respects, one of my most impressive builds to date. Expect an IoI MOCs entry in the next few days, and regular chapter updates over the next few weeks.1 point -

Chapter 6 is up, and so is the image that was to accompany chapter 5. Anyway, here's a quick recap for those of you trying to figure out what the blok is going on these past couple days. I recently began my infiltration of the Elimbies, but some particularly dense asterisk didn't get the joke and summoned the wrath of the moderation team upon my topic there. Elimbier's former signature stated that he was eleven years old. And somehow he interpreted this response... ...as evidence that Elimbier was a completely different person from me. The notion of creating a fictitious persona in the interest of comedy must be completely foreign to him. And don't even bring up the "lying" allegation, because it's so obviously said with tongue in cheek and we all know people claiming to be Time Lords and whatnot in their signature but nobody gives a fuss about them. My topic was thus reported and the moderation team retroactively rejected my topic on grounds of plagiarizing this very topic here on RRU, despite the fact that I expressed intentions to propagate this on the "Elimbies" in the foreword, never mind asking of them to scroll down for context. In their mild defense, they aren't familiar with the rich history of that term on this site, but surely they would be cognizant enough to correlate Elimbies with Elimbier, an account that has been in position now for well over a year. I submitted this appeal in the form of a topic bound for rejection. Oh, and it was entitled "An Appeal for Sanity". I'm leaving up that edit at the beginning of this topic as an artifact of this encounter, and because I find it outright hilarious. In a surprising act of lucidity on part of moderation, the topic was reinstated, but shamefully this follow-up message submitted prior to the topic's rejection wasn't. The culprit, inexplicably, was still completely lost at this point. Instead of drawing the logical conclusion he soon points out that Elimbier's signature indicates that he's twelve now. By the way, it's Elimbier, with a limb. Typical Elimbier, making such spelling errors. Also, nothing was merged, it's just a restoration of what he had them take down. Then he wrote up this gem on his LEGO account. This naturally escalated into a masterful prank, beautifully cataloged in the posts above and scattered across the RRU chatroom. Note the beautiful title. To which he replied... Immediately afterward... Upon realization... Underlined for your convenience. Jellyfish ensued, and the truth has been elucidated to the Hero of Origami. Chromey, either you are a brilliant troll or just stupefyingly gullible. Wow, that went a lot longer than I anticipated. TL;DR... Yeah, he's totally pissed over the whole ordeal. Also, according to our edifying chatroom conversations, I'm apparently the devil now, and Nog is the Queen of America. I regret nothing. God save the queen!1 point -
