ok all these people joining in the last couple months saying they're remaking the game (and frequently showing at least some progress for once) are starting to make me suspicious is there something up that i missed

People have talked to them about it, in short they don't see it as worth their time/part of their digital games strategy. Especially as the rights to who owns what is a bit messy, too.

Don't let the video fool you, it's still being developed, so it looks like you can only try it out if you are in the UK at the moment. But just what is it? The video's maddening insistence on just using the word "stuff" wasn't helpful, but from what I gather from the actual site, it seems like Lego is trying to set up its own social network that focuses on building contests. Building contests for kids aren't very interesting for us mature, adult, LEGO™ Connoisseurs, but what may be interesting to us is the other stuff - a minifig avatar customizer for your profile, accounts 'belonging to' minifig characters (getting into MLN territory here), and "easy access to all the latest LEGO® news." There's also this, from the FAQ: ...which seems to imply game-like elements are part of the deal. So maybe this is quite literally going to be MLN 2.0. Something to keep an eye on, I think!

There's Wine, but it doesn't always work for such ancient games and their ancient DirectX (or even older) renderers. I got too many graphics glitches in LRR last time I ran it in Wine. Remaking them from scratch is probably easier than trying to fix the old engines (for which the source code probably doesn't even exist anymore). The same effort could just be put into making new games, so I'm not surprised it hasn't happened. Engine remakes by the community are a more likely way to keep these games alive on new PCs... they just tend to die when it's only one person making them.

that emulation stuff really only works for DOSbox, and that's lightweight enough to package with the games too. I dunno if there's any game emulators for Win98-era stuff, afaik you have to emulate the whole OS most of the time, and even then some of the issues come from newer graphics cards not working well with these games. I'm sure it's possible and there's some project out there to make a Win98 "dosbox" but i've not heard about it so it's probably unstable if it even exists.

"Voicing opinions with well-backed arguments" and "hate" are two rather different things, as I've learnt on RRU. We're very... vocal, when we have something we want to say. I've also noted that positive feedback (which is good) tend to take up less space than negative feedback (which is also good), as negative feedback usually needs some preliminary explanation... ... just two comments.

Who's "we"? and we don't all hate it. This is a feedback topic for DDI, still relevant should they actually do something. I still think the product they had in mind was very different to the impressions they were giving, thinking words like "Minecraft" would spark our interest without realizing it would do the complete opposite. Additionally vague ideas, a rushed website didn't give us much faith in the product. As a result, conclusions were jumped to on both parties and now the project's "icing". Still should they be working on it in secret I'd very much be interested in seeing what the came up with. Stewart is still following this topic and even though we asked him to actively communicate with us regularly to relieve some of the bad perceptions getting around, some sort of response on what is going on would be appreciated.
