    lcdr & humanoid's Server Project - Update

    Now that the custom LU server community is picking up motion again lately, it might be time to remind the world we're still around. We're lcdr and humanoid. Three years ago, when no one knew anything at all about how LU's network worked, humanoid managed to decrypt the network traffic captured by pwjones before the game closed and wrote the first server prototype. I then added functionality to load worlds, even though at the time all the server did was send packets from the captured traffics and no dynamic functionality was implemented. In the weeks afterwards, conflict arose between timtech and raffa on hosting and modification rights of this code. Not interested in the drama and knowing that only focused development could eventually lead to a working server, humanoid and I continued our work in private. However we still wanted the knowledge we gained from analysing the client and the packets to be accessible to other projects, so we published documentation from our findings. The timtech/raffa conflict eventually caused the forum to fracture, and most remaining public projects failed to develop any meaningful improvements over the initial version. However we continued our work in private, moving steadily closer to a fully functioning server. In the last three years, we have spent countless hours analysing the client, the packets and the required network interaction. Moreso, I have implemented our findings in a server which should be the most complete implementation around. Currently implemented: Missions Achievements Inventory Quickbuilds A Scripting system NPCs Enemies & Smashables (AI being worked on) Multiplayer and many more As you can see in the video, all the functionality for a fully playable Venture Explorer is there, and other Worlds are almost completely working. Notable exceptions are minigames like Survival and Racing, which I am currently working on. We are not releasing any public release at this point because we want to deliver a playable server that is able to provide sustained gameplay to players. We've been considering releasing since about a year ago but decided against it because much still needs to be implemented for the game to be fully playable. Nonetheless, we think that competition and sharing of information is a good thing, and we wish DLU the best of luck with their server project. Perhaps with time more server projects even will appear too. We hope that other projects also take part in the spirit of shared information and publish their findings or amend our documentation when something new is discovered. The more we know about the network the sooner a fully working server can be realized. Anyways, I'll be around to answer any questions, and as mentioned in the docs, we're on IRC sometimes too.

    Hey everyone! Been busy with work so haven't been able to put a ton of time into it. Unfortunately, sometimes you need to set priorities... So I added priorities to the game! I also have changed a ton in how the game works and how classes pass information. So there has been a lot changed but 90% of it you can't see. The job system had been improved with support for priorities, Tools and auto tasking. Updated Game @risingstar64 Thanks! I have actually seen your HTML5 remake before, awesome stuff! @aidenpons Open sourcing is definitely on the table! Too early to do so at the moment, but at the very least I can promise if I ever stop working on the game I will release all the source code. Also I guess I should mention that I tried to live stream some development of the game. It definitely causes me to make more mistakes but it was still fun, there will most likely be more!     Since the name of the project is "Loose Rock | Rock Raiders Remake," can I call this LRRRR, or LR4 ? Wow... RR's actually DO stuff when I don't tell them to! And they don't just sit around doing nothing? Great stuff! However, is the coding durable enough to have a "distance" factor involved too, and the closest LRR does the job - a particular problem when you get to ultra-large levels, which is why in LRR I strip-mine bits and wait for my fleet of STTs to pick up all the ore before moving on. I need that ore too, as my Chrome Crusher's Engine requires 1000 to upgrade and its drill requires 1500. It's worth it though. Amazing....

    @BergerBytesNice work! This looks excellent so far. Also, I couldn't agree more; Unity definitely feels like the right tool for the job here @aidenponsCollaborating sounds like a great idea. Parts of my project's codebase are still a trainwreck due to ancient code written in a language with loose typing at a time when I had very little scalability in mind, so the last thing I want to do is subject anybody else to that. However, as a fairly experienced Unity developer I would be happy to lend a hand here should this project go open source.

  23. 2. Install VirtualBox If you don’t already have VirtualBox on your computer you will need to install it now. Click here to go to the downloads page for VirtualBox. I have linked to the test builds as Windows 10 isn’t quite supported on the complete releases, but rest assured that I have tested it the latest build on my computer with no problems. Download the Windows version under 5.0.x builds. Once the file is downloaded, run it and follow the instructions to install VirtualBox. Once installed, launch VirtualBox. Select File from the top menu bar, then click Preferences.... Under the General tab, click the dropdown arrow next to the Default Machine Folder and choose Other.... Then select/create a folder where you would like your Windows XP system to be run from. I have chosen a custom VirtualBox folder in my Documents folder. Finally, move the VirtualXPVHD.vhd file into the above folder to keep things organised. Great, you have installed and configured VirtualBox!
