    LEGO Island Size Comparison

Earlier today I imported the original LEGO Island model into a LEGO game project of mine to test something and noticed that despite it being scaled accurately, it felt a lot smaller with a third person camera. So I imported the LI2 island model to compare, then a rip of the IXS island from Xiron, all scaled to match each other, to see just how much the island had grown between games... Images under the spoiler. Bonus: LEGO Island(s) vs Nexus Tower in LEGO Universe. First, read this if you haven't already. Now prepare yourself: See also: Pics of LEGO Island combined with its full racetrack: Todo: Figure out how big these islands would be if built with real bricks...

    lcdr & humanoid's Server Project - Update

Now that the custom LU server community is picking up motion again lately, it might be time to remind the world we're still around. We're lcdr and humanoid. Three years ago, when no one knew anything at all about how LU's network worked, humanoid managed to decrypt the network traffic captured by pwjones before the game closed and wrote the first server prototype. I then added functionality to load worlds, even though at the time all the server did was send packets from the captured traffics and no dynamic functionality was implemented. In the weeks afterwards, conflict arose between timtech and raffa on hosting and modification rights of this code. Not interested in the drama and knowing that only focused development could eventually lead to a working server, humanoid and I continued our work in private. However we still wanted the knowledge we gained from analysing the client and the packets to be accessible to other projects, so we published documentation from our findings. The timtech/raffa conflict eventually caused the forum to fracture, and most remaining public projects failed to develop any meaningful improvements over the initial version. However we continued our work in private, moving steadily closer to a fully functioning server. In the last three years, we have spent countless hours analysing the client, the packets and the required network interaction. Moreso, I have implemented our findings in a server which should be the most complete implementation around. Currently implemented: Missions Achievements Inventory Quickbuilds A Scripting system NPCs Enemies & Smashables (AI being worked on) Multiplayer and many more As you can see in the video, all the functionality for a fully playable Venture Explorer is there, and other Worlds are almost completely working. Notable exceptions are minigames like Survival and Racing, which I am currently working on. We are not releasing any public release at this point because we want to deliver a playable server that is able to provide sustained gameplay to players. We've been considering releasing since about a year ago but decided against it because much still needs to be implemented for the game to be fully playable. Nonetheless, we think that competition and sharing of information is a good thing, and we wish DLU the best of luck with their server project. Perhaps with time more server projects even will appear too. We hope that other projects also take part in the spirit of shared information and publish their findings or amend our documentation when something new is discovered. The more we know about the network the sooner a fully working server can be realized. Anyways, I'll be around to answer any questions, and as mentioned in the docs, we're on IRC sometimes too.

Which Lego Island is the best?

Not exactly the wording I'd use but sure, lemme go through each of the islands and say my thoughts on 'em: LI1 ISLAND: The one I spent most of my childhood with, which probably explains why I've got such utter nostalgia for the place. It may be the smallest of the islands and being forced to stay on the paths is still a bit eh, but in terms of charm and things to do? This place beats out the rest by a country mile. The majority of buildings being actual places you can enter also adds to that sense of liveliness LI1 gives off, since it makes 'em more than just "large piece of scenery #28". I like this island, I like it a lot. It's the definition of "bigger doesn't always mean better". LI2 ISLAND: It's... alright I guess? There's not an excessive amount to do (the majority of buildings are just scenery, and the one that isn't has one of those godawful load times attached) and although you've got a bit more freedom of movement around the place (it's a lot bigger than LI1 and you're no longer restricted to the paths), it's just a bit... unappealing? Some of the charm from LI1 is still there, but in more measured quantities compared to the outright bizarreness of the original. I will give it points for having a train though, trains are cool. Oh, and the grass is a horrible shade of green. Nobody likes the bright-green grass. Nobody. LIXS ISLAND: I'm somewhat divided on this last one. It's the largest of the three and it's certainly got a lot more substance in terms of activities than LI2's, but it somehow lacks that certain charm that LI1 had. They went all-out with the "XTREME STUNTS" stuff in an attempt to appeal to the hip youth culture of 2003, but sorta left behind what made LI so special in the first place - the sense of liveliness. There's all sorts of things to collect and cars to drive about in and missions to do, but the tone is just very... bland. It just feels like a bog-standard open world, and that goes against LI's tone completely. So whilst it's the most advanced outta the three... it just can't beat the original (it sure as hell beats LI2 though, because there's stuff to actually do here). All in all, I voted for LI1's island. Maybe I'm clouded by nostalgia slightly (I probably am aren't I), but after having a detailed look through 'em all I gotta say it's the one I like the most. 11/10 island will protect with my life.

    The "Res-Q Center Glitch"

Before I got IXS I read this guide on GameFAQs, which noted an interesting glitch: Then in 2010 this guy found that something similar could happen at the garage if you got out of a car while underneath it: It's pretty easy to do, and you don't have to be in that exact spot for it to work: For a while I suspected this would work with any building, but I don't remember if I ever tested it or not. Well, I did just now, and used Xiron's cheat engine table to get Pepper stuck inside the police station: Also the helicopter's position changed somehow but I dunno what happened there lol. What I really wanna know, though, is why the game is sticking the name of the building Pepper's stuck in into the list of tricks you're doing... Oh, and while doing this usually means you get stuck forever, I did manage to break free at the Res-Q Center after a long string of tricks one time (in 2010 going by the date I originally uploaded this screenshot to Brickshelf), which resulted in a score so high the UI broke:

It's Pi Day! Here's a stupid method for calculating Pi.

Here. The gist is that it recursively creates and calculates the area of squares that compose a circle with radius 1, and totals the area of those squares to get Pi.
