LEGO Universe closure and subscription numbers

There's one particular post from Lunibook that I feel is worth calling special attention to, posted by WBL member Flambridge on late Saturday, November 5, 2011, the day after the closure was announced: It all speaks for itself, though there's one thing I wanna discuss. According to this, LU had 2 million players, only 100,000 of which were paying subscribers. The 2 million figure is backed up by the official press release announcing the closure: There's one other number for paying subscribers I've seen floating around the internet though, 38,000. The source for that seems to be Brick by Brick by David Robertson, which has a whole chapter on the development of LU. I own a copy, here's the relevant part: It seems they meant a few months before the closure was announced (to both the players and developers) on November 4th, 2011, not a few months before the servers shut down (Midnight of January 30, 2012)... There'd have been no cautious optimism at that point, nor a staff to be even be optimistic, besides the few left to maintain the servers. So the 38,000 number probably comes from around the time F2P was launched in August 2011, maybe slightly before. F2P would have then been responsible for the rise from 38,000 subscribers to 100,000 subscribers + 1.9 million F2P players in the few months until it was axed on that morning in early November.

WATER WORKS IS THE MOST CRASH-f****ING-INDUCING LEVEL IN THE GAME, f**** FROZEN FRENZY, f**** BACK TO BASICS, THIS LEVEL IS THE TRUE NIGHTMARE OF TEDIUM, AND IT'S EVEN f****ING WORSE IN BAZ'S MOD WHERE IT TAKES FOREVER TO COMPLETE SINCE YOU HAVE TO USE A SMALL DIGGER TO DRILL THROUGH MILES OF HARD ROCK TO GET ENOUGH CRYSTALS BECAUSE IT'S THE ONLY DIGGING VEHICLE THAT CAN BE CARRIED AND THEN IT CRASHES FOR ABSOLUTELY NO REASON JUST AS YOU'RE ABOUT TO WIN, JUST LIKE IN VANILLA, f**** THIS LEVEL, f**** WHOEVER CAME UP WITH IT, f**** KARL FOR PROBABLY PROGRAMMING IT EVEN THOUGH HE'S COOL OTHERWISE, DAMN IT ALL TO HELL anyway I don't think it's one of the better missions in the game, but that's just my opinion

Avant Gardens gameplay part 2 - lcdr & humanoid's server project

We're continuing where we left off, with the main questline after having completed survival. Featured in this video are mostly free-to-play missions, which have the additional complication that their scripts have been removed from the client, so replicating the behavior is more difficult than usual. As mentioned last time, Movement AI is not implemented, as it's too complex to justify a prioritization over other features. Other than that the implementation is moving along pretty well, with functionality almost indistinguishable from the original server.

You would be surprised at how difficult that is to do. It's extraordinarily difficult to force LRR to crash at a random time. LRR just crashes in general, you might say. It would be possible to make a random timer that opens a cavern that spawns twenty five slimy slugs per second (that causes insane lag and a crash shortly after - found that out when one of my NPL scripts tied to "monsters-in-existence" broke), but truly "random" timers would be hard to make - and it'd be level-specific. It's possible to get things to crash when something specific happens - such as specifying an invalid bitmap for the play-saxophone animation and then waiting around long enough for the game to crash. I suppose you could call that random, although to make that into a useful (for a given definition of "useful") crashing function would take about 100 idle (on second thoughts, carrying would be more useful) abilities in the Pilot.ae, only one of which crashes. What is known is that the likelihood of LRR crashing goes up with the amount the game is handling - RRs, vehicles, monsters, tiles, power paths, etc etc etc. Hence it's possible to NPL-script these to spawn (particularly mass-demolishing walls / screwing around with everything), but you need to script that. In particular, I've noticed decreasing stability with size of map - Lava Laughter has practically never crashed despite filling everything to the near-corners and collecting 200 Energy Crystals, whereas a huge map like Water Works has a higher chance of going kaput. Why did I bother writing this up on causing LRR to randomly crash? I haven't a clue Also I'm disappointed Ringtail, you didn't let Windows check for a solution to the problem. I'm sure it'll find you a solution in no time.

Which Lego Island is the best?

From a gameplay perspective, IXS is the best. The minigames are decently varied despite them mostly revolving around driving. Exploration is encouraged through brickimal bricks and character cards scattered about the island. The physics aren't ridiculous compared to LI2. I plan on playing it again. LI2 is a hot mess, but it does have a "plot" and its minigames are extremely varied. It would be a decent game if the loading times weren't 10% of the total gameplay and if its various issues were ironed out. But that would make it IXS. LI2 is to LEGO games as Zelda II is to the Legend of Zelda series. It wasn't really great, but no one knew where the series would go this early on, so they tried different things. LI1 isn't a game. It's a playset where you walk around, watch people jump out of nowhere to scream at you (WOOOHOHO MY GOODNESS GRACIOUS), turn flowers to cups, and occasionally build a car or deliver a pizza. Two of the minigames are races on unique tracks, while three of them are the exact same thing with a different route (drive from A to B, watch cutscene as Robb said). These games barely change for each character. The pizza routes change but that's it, I think. Only Pepper has a minigame unique to him and it's kinda bad. This wasn't a problem when the game came out because I was 7 years old, which is within the target demographic. At that time, I remember the helicopter portion of the Brickster chase being a load of garbage and I still think that today, if that's helpful. Despite that, LI1 has a lot going for it. It's the first LEGO game, and it has really good voice acting for a late-90's PC game. The graphics are decent for the time, and the stereo effects are pretty neat. It also has lots of classic music. I think IXS has better music, but LI1's is more memorable. We don't talk about LI2's music.

I've done this with monster emerges and it never crashed, just lagged to hell. does slug AI work differently? maybe equating specifically powered buildings complicates it? wait actually I did that with PTL script, I didn't know you could do that with NPL too. nerps sounds way more complex than I remember, guess I should look into it sometime and see if there's anything cool that can be made out of it. also I'd like to update that my second attempt at this level failed because the AI shat itself as a result of too much rubble on the map, and the game started to drop frames more and more even though my number of units was unchanged so I can only assume it was from calculating pathfinding , it's f****ing dwarf fortress all over again. unrelated but later on water lot of fun crashed when i clicked on "teleport to LMS Explorer" for a random raider, good game very stable.

    New lego theme?

Hi all, you may remember me from a few years ago. I staged a coup and seized control of the forums from the mods. Then I got banned. But I've talked it over with the mods in the intervening years and we're cool now. Happy to be back! To prove my worth to you all, I wanted to give you a little gift. My aunt works for Lego and he has provided me with information on a top-secret new lego line: LEGO UNIKITTY. sets will include cloud cuckooland 2.0, unikitty palace (the dog), and unikitty battle flyers (think like the airjitzus from ninjago but even better). ill try to get some pictures from the catalog i have later. happy to answer questions

Geez, AG sure got grindy after the F2P update. It's good to know people are able to re-live that grind all these years later though.
