A free Windows video editor is preferable, but if there is a significantly better Linux video editor, I will VM it. I'm not sure if it allows mashing up of clips and audio, but if I recall correctly, I liked it more than the hundreds of other programs specifically for that. Quite hard to obtain though you could watch youtube videos on how to acquire it free. Heaps of youtube 'famous' people use it. I know that there's a difference in currency value between the land downunder and the land of liberty, but is it that big? Vegas Platinum is only $200 or so in the US. If you need something for Audio, either stick to Audacity for single sounds which need effects applied, or Reaper for complication projects.
