MCHover
I don't know whether this has been found out before or not, but I will post it now... While trying to find out which savegame files I should backup, I stumbled upon this. I opened a .dat file in the saves directory with a hex editor and noticed the caracteristic 424D (which bitmaps always start with) in the beginning of the file. Then I renamed the file to .bmp, and the picture that came, was the one showed next to the saved game, when you want to load it! (I don't what else to call that.) This isn't really usefull to know, but I think it is funny. ;)
Cyrem
Yes, I did know of that. Thats how it stores the preview images for the save game screen.
MCHover
Yes, I did know of that. Thats how it stores the preview images for the save game screen. Someone had figured it out then. But, why not just stick to bitmaps when nothing in the format seems to be changed?
Lair
Because it's more effective to save it like that instead of a BMP since people won't see it as a BMP and ignore it.
