Awesome, although I count seven masks when we have six Toa. Is the seventh a Protector mask, or something else? I can't quite tell from the video.

It's the Mask of Creation!

Say wha?! So, for the time being at least, that's the only way to obtain a Mask of Creation? I haven't really been keeping track of the BIONICLE sets to-be-announced.

The Mask Maker vs Skull Grinder set coming out this summer will have a plastic Mask of Creation, so there'll be other ways to get the mask. Just, you know, not in solid gold.

Ah, I forgot about that set, thank you.

Actually, no. In the video, the seventh mask shown in the center is the Skull Spider mask, which was given away in that multi-site building competition. That said, at the Flatiron BIONICLE event, they did have a real gold Mask of Creation on display in addition to the ones shown in the video, minus the Skull Spider mask, so there are actually eight gold masks total, and seven currently up for grabs (or should I say six, as they didn't show the MoC in the video, meaning they may intend to hold off on giving it away until this summer.)

(Did I really just correct Pereki on something BIONICLE? I sense this may come back to bite me...)

Ha, no you're quite right, that is the Gold Mask of Skull Spiders there. I just assumed that it was the Mask of Creation, since the former has already been given away.

So yeah, what you said sounds spot-on.

What, the Mask of Skull Spiders doesn't even look like the Mask of Creation...

Anyways, I definitely want a gold Mask of Creation. I wonder if earning any of these other six masks would prohibit me from earning a gold MoC?

I've never done this whole "hash-tag" thing before, I've always been so against it. But I just can't say no to this competition!

Nice find, Ayliffe! This sounds do-able but the downside of that is that it's going to be do-able for a lot of people, which means a lot of competing entries!

So this got put up on the official BIONICLE VK page - a map of the Ancient City of the Mask Makers.

I don't know what you're playing at, LEGO, but whatever it is, good job.

Of all the things to get a shout-out... I don't know maybe it's just a coincidence. Then again, this is Bionicle we're talking about.

This certainly has the potential to be interesting, though whether it actually means anything or not is still up in the air. (Of course, it may be many years before it becomes relevant, like with the Mata-Nui robot face appearing in MNOLG, nearly nine years before the robot was revealed!)

Between this and the recurring Mask of Time, I'd say we're in for an interesting ride- and I'm loving it.

Just following up on that discovery:

- the mouth is the Mask Maker's forge, which has a fire motif just as the Mangai that made Mata-Nui's mouth did.

- the Ancient City is the home of the Skulls. And it's shaped like the Boneheads island. Boneheads. Skulls. The Skulls are an undead army of Boneheads rising to exact their revenge on BIONICLE for replacing them. I want to go even further and say its a meta commentary on the whole "hero factory killed bonkles" thing, but, that may be a little too far.

I just checked the BZPower forums, and apparently BIONICLE VK is just a Russian fan site, and that map posted is nothing more than fanon.

Damn you Pereki.

This isn't an April Fools joke, if that's what you mean. SPIRIT is wrong, this is an official LEGO webpage. here's a rough translation of the text that came with the image (oh, wait, this was already done. oh well):

As I promised, soon we will fight with Lord Spider Skull in the ruined city of the Creator Masks. It remains only to get more soldiers, and I hope you will help me in this =)

However, before you go God knows where, let's learn a little more.

Ruined City Creator Masks

Completely destroyed and absorbed in the jungle city of Masks Creator is deep in the woods. It was there from the time of the great cataclysm is immersed in a deep sleep Creator Masks.

Today the city is in a state of complete rest, time stopped here ever since the Great cooled coal forge. The city waited for him to awaken life for many thousands of years. When the outbreak of the Great Forge again lit the fire, the city wakes up.

Here is a diagram of the ruined city. It is useful to us when we gonna get there.

This description actually names the forge for the first time ("Great Forge"). If you want more proof, they've posted this concept art. That's not something a fan does in his spare time, and it matches the Ancient City concept art we got at the return announcement.

Regardless of the officiality of the map, it is at odds with what we've seen of the City in the animations. To wit, this picture.

The city in the animations is much straighter in shape, almost like an aircraft carrier.

If the ersatz Boneheads map is official, it might just be concept art.

Of course, media dissonance is nothing new to BIONICLE, so it could well be canon (provided Gen2 is even going with the level of scrutiny Gen1 did in that regard.)

Also, am I the only one who thinks that those Protector-mask fonts look like the original Silurians? =P

Yeah, visual continuity between mediums has never really been a mainstay for BIONICLE - different works are going to take things in their own directions, and that's okay. One thing that I really appreciate about G2 is that it is forcing people to drop their notions of a singular 'canon'. That's just not how media like BIONICLE works. Each story and work exists as a result of the materials and knowledge its creators were supplied with, not as an arbitrary collection of 'right' and 'wrong' things as defined after the fact by consumers, of all people.

The idea of canon isn't defined by consumers, though. A good way to determine what is canon and what is not is to take the word of the people making the content (see here) and then use those guidelines to determine what is and isn't canon.

As far as I know, there was a central continuity and different degrees of canon in BIONICLE. Dunno about now.

Not initially, but in any long-running series (and some short ones, as well,) the audience invariably begins to influence the lore. Doctor Who is a prime example of this.

The original Bionicle's "Fanon" was twofold. It came either from contests or from Greg accepting fan suggestions in the "Ask Greg" topic on BZPower (later on the LMBs.) The latter has become rather controversial, particularly, I believe, post-2010, when it was the only source of new canon.

That's about right, at least post-2005. It was nothing near the level of complexity of Star Wars' system, mind you. Mostly Greg discarding elements (e.g. romance) that didn't fit with his vision of the story.

The new story hasn't progressed far enough for any concept of canon to become pertinent. But judging by what the story team has said (that they want to follow style of the Mata Nui years) and done (the lack of original names,) I think it's safe to say that they want to distance themselves from the perceived convolution of Gen1.
