Warning: Quite long and probably nigh-indecipherable to those who don't play BZPower Mafia.

 

shivered, stepping out of his hut into the chill nocturnal air. Heading north, he embarked once more upon his nightly journey. It had become common practice for many of the villagers, for the joint purpose of calming the nerves and lessening the chances of one's demise.  Unit's nerves certainly needed calming, though not in the same way as the natives of  Botalnu. Treading the vine-conquered earth (which barely succeeded in fulfilling its function as a path,) he blithely whistled an alien ditty.

Pain. Rage. Bewilderment. A torrent of contradictions and compulsions that batter my raw mind like leering rocks welcoming a shipwrecked sailor. That is a good image, or so it now seems. But how do I know what tis' like to sail the sea, let alone experience death in her embrace. How many suns are there? Is the Uotu bird a many-colored beast, or does it wear a shade of profound ebony? How many continents stand sentinel upon the deep? Is there a Crawelthawm? Are its libraries and statues held in awe by a thousand peoples, or are they but fleeting phantasms? Or is it Polendra, its immeasurable hives resounding with the choral equations of industrious drones with a plethora of chitinous appendages, that holds that honor? Are they drones? They are more than beasts, and yet their rough, tiled brains never feel the sensation of determined thought. I've lost something. What is it? Have I misplaced the... the... the... the... the History's Bounty. Perhaps that's it. Oh my sacred spork!  The Great Beast of Dalen's Vale? Doomed by its nature to record and reiterate the history of the winged ones that tamed it long ago? To know the multitude of myriad ways they soared and squabbled and wrote and loved and ate and sculpted and sang? Perhaps I did it a mercy. After all, Leyner's been a-wasting for millennia now. If he ever lived. Can one live a thousand years, let alone a century? How long have I lived? Perhaps I've felt the stars, counted them as friends, while I soared through the firmament, drinking from its depths. What are one and one? Tarle and rew? The assimilation of qoitlatfan and trenelew? What world am I on? World? Ha ha! I'm but an artifice, a cog. I think, I dream, I breath. Why are my hands not soft, tender as ripe fruit? Eyes? What are those, again? Did Karsus the Elder take Ewtulnyr by valor, or was it by some sort of chimera he prepared for its people? Did he have a son? And how many noses did he breath with? What stanza, which chapter, did his lineage end in? What was the meter? Was his life stacatto? Ah, tis' cold! But is it colder than the tundra of the Ussal Continent? Or was it Jubilee? Where did the mountains sing? Where am I? Do the bogs of the east pull me into their bowels? What is a solar system? How many particles are in a star? How could the greatest scientist known to history have lived in a barrow, when he resided in a palatial labyrinth, a fabulous dwelling hewn from strange materials formulated by its very architect? Oh, to be free, drifting blissfully down streams of nectar! Though the journey be long, yet the dreams of it are longer. Tra-la-la-la, tra-la-la-la!  Tra-la-la-la- what's that I hear crunch crunch snap snap-crack no subtlety whatsoever.  Oh, it's him. Just whom I was hoping for. And he's saved me the journey. How delightful. But my brain! Oh how he torments me! He must die, cease, sleep no fall disintegrate persish perish perish bad bad bad! Come here, my little Terfold Hare. Let me stroke your smoking back, pluck your optical receptors from their sockets, eat your wild circuitry, make horns from your great hind legs. What? Not coming? That won't do one bit. I'll moan and scream and howl and pierce the air like a swarm of Hoto-flies if your don't visit me! D'you hear? Now you will!

Unit was shaken to his core by the sound, primal and agonized, that erupted from behind him. As he recovered his reason, he espied an opening, obscured by the canopy of the jungle. With no small amount of trepidation he approached the entrance. A second howl rang out, chilling him far more than the night air could ever hope to. Entering, he could see a figure huddled pathetically on the floor, familiar, and yet so very strange. "Calm yourself, I'm here. Now what's your problem?"

 

"A wise being once said," responded the figure, looking up at him with distant, bestial eyes, "that the universe is a riddle, and today you're the problem!"
As his lungs were torn like morsels from his throat, Unit could not help but try to scream, the futility but feeding the urge.

 

Day Five

As the birds of Botalnu sang their morning hymns, now quite inappropriately light, the door of Taka Nuvia's hut opened. "Are you there Takia? I mean- that is to say, are you awake? I should so dearly like to- oh... Not you too! Wake up! Please! Burnmad died too easily. I must have fun! How am I to amuse myself if no one screams? Ah... I remember now... That's why I was able to kill... Oh please not you! This is just what happened to poor Rider, or almost, maybe, somewhat... Similar, anyway. Something found you quite delicious! Oh, poor Takia!"

 

Sobbing profusely, had yet achieved his insane ambitions. He had brought death to Botalnu.

 

Watching this, a sad, lonely spirit reflected on her failure. She been chosen by Haipori Nui to protect Botalnu, to stem the mortal tide that swept the island, but to no avail. And so, drifting ethereally, she mourned lost friends and lost happiness, whilst wondering if she'd ever return to a body. Not that she wanted to return to the sad, empty remains of her village.

And so ends the tale of Botalnu...

But that is not all. For Botalnu was but a minute fraction of a much larger sphere. And that sphere was contained in another. And in that other sphere, on a placid, lulling island, resides another group of beings, not unlike those of Botalnu. They mourned the fate of that lower isle, having watched over it for so long. They mourned, too, one of their number.

 

The previous night, on Tara Karda:

The sweet melody of panpipes wafted through the air, companion to the comforting breeze. If he had been himself, Burnmad would certainly have savored this sweet pairing. But all was not well with him. He stood, eerily still and silent, statue-like.

 

The emerald leaves of the nearby bushes rustled, and a figure emerged. Hands seeped in flame-blue light, this one looked with bewilderment on Burnmad's state, and then, hesitating no longer, placed a hand upon his rigid form.

The sound of birdsong was interspersed with a sickening crackle, as Burnmad crumbled into a noisome cloud. His killer was not especially surprised by this (novelty as it was,) however, but by what fell from his disintegrating form. It fell to the ground with a plop, but was not long to be seen.

Well, that was unexpected. I should have been more thorough. Still, with any luck, I'll get another chance.

And here's a bit more about Tara Karda, for those of you who weren't in the know:

 

Lying in the Ylrania Sea, a month's journey from the nearest landmass, the Jubilee continent, is the island of Tara-Karda. It is a pleasant place, blanketed with plains, majestic forests covering the hills. To the east, Kanohi Bay allows for entry by ship and convenient fishing. The only sign of civilization is a cluster of buildings, mostly small, semi-spherical domiciles, and a large structure in the middle of them all. The structure was clearly quite utilitarian at one point, but has since been decorated with various sculptures and other architectural extrusions, so as to seem more than a simple rectangle. Inside this building the ten inhabitants of the island go about their daily work, operating complex equipment to ensure the continuing function of Haipori-Nui's engines and, by extension, the survival of the universe. In a world beneath their own, beings like them, only more primitive, go about their lives on the Isle of Botalnu, unaware that in maintainning Haipori-Nui's temple they are also maintaining him. Indeed, as far as they know, Botalnu is the only place in the universe.

Five days ago, a great tremor struck Tara-Karda. The workers had the fortune of being within the complex when it struck, or else some of their number would likely have perished in the upheaval, crushed by their own dwellings. As if the tremor's damage was not enough, Botalnu was also quite clearly affected. Most notably when one of the villagers was found gruesomely murdered. But that was not all. For today, one of the workers, the Communications Monitor, was found decapitated...

 

Rules

 

You all have avatars on Botalnu, allowing you to act as villagers. When you die, your avatar, of course, ceases to function.

Each day, you will vote on a worker to banish to Botalnu, in the hopes of banishing a killer. N.B. You can banish only one worker per day, due to equipment failures. If a worker's avatar is dead, then he will die when banished (though since he has been banished, he may be revived, of course, by the Onyx Shaman.) You may also recall one banished worker per day (as long as he's alive, of course.)

 

One among you is the Coolant Monitor, whose avatar is the Emerald Shaman. As long as his avatar is alive, he can control the weather on Botalnu without fail. Once his avatar is dead, he will have only a one-in-three of doing so successfully. Due to the cataclysm, the mental mist that normally prevents the villagers of Botalnu from remembering the identities of the Shamans (who exist for the purpose of keeping things smoothly running on Botalnu) has spread to Tara-Karda. This also applies to the Coolant Monitor.

Due to the cataclysm, the barriers between the worlds have been weakened. After the equivalent of two days of extreme weather, the weather of Botalnu will break through into Tara-Karda, affecting the workers as it affects the villagers.

Miserable weather counts for half a day of extreme weather, while regular heat or cold counts for only a quarter of a day. Temperate weather has no effects.

When one a worker dies (aside from the Coolant Monitor,) warm weather will become more likely. Since the villagers of Botalnu keep the engines running,  when one of them dies, cold weather becomes more likely. 

Your goal is to root out the killers in your facility. You are not directly concerned with the fate of the inhabitants of Botalnu. They can be replaced, in time (though not during this game.)

Why would someone need to raise a flame shield? I though it was mostly generally agreed that the humor in Colors was terrible.
